I'm very interested in a robot vac. How harsh are these things on furniture? Will the roomba mark/scuff up my furniture legs and baseboards?

We have some oriental rugs that have long fringe, will these get tangled in the fringe or can they work through it?

With the Roomba's, I haven't had any issues with the running into walls. The furniture is a different story. While I haven't seen any damage yet (about 4 months in), it will ram the shite out of chair legs. Anything with a narrow leg actually. I think it wants to frick them, in its own robotic way.

This is the kind of stuff our room a did to our furniture (sofa leg). Not a single scratch or issue with Neato.

ETA: as you can see, these things are necessary with a black lab. That hair is from one weekend without the Neato running.

Mine D80 goes around most stuff because of the laser. If it bumps it, it is just a tiny tap, and then it backs up or turns. I can't see it damaging anything

Get the extended warranty. My first neato had problems after 8 months and got a new one under warranty. My second one has had problems after 8 or 9 months and is about to bite the dust. I really like the neato, but either I got a lemon or they are not very reliable.

One of the best purchases I've ever made. I bought a discontinued model on Amazon when they were blowing them out to make room for the next model. I'd recommend doing that, or buying an open box one on Amazon returns, if you're worried bout price.

I have not heard good things about the damp mopping ones.

I had this discussion with a friend who has one. She says it sharply lessens the frequency she has to do standard vacuuming.....which is still necessary.

One funny thing she mentioned (not funny to her) was that one day the Roomba hit a fresh pile of dogshit and smeared it all over the first floor.

any issues with transition strips? I have a section of floor that goes from wood to tile with a 2" wide T-strip. I've been worried a bot would not cross it.

It should not have a problem with that at all, mine has 2 issues and I've only been able to resolve one. I have the neato D series.

1) I have a 2" drop-off into a sunroom. It makes it down the drop but it will not climb back up. Then once it's gets stuck it seems to struggle on what it has or hasn't completed.

2) They really struggle on rooms with double entries. I put the magnetic strip down at one entrance which solves the issue, not a fan of having that lay around and I'll never remember to put it down before it runs if I pick it up.

I generally run it before I get home, I'm still a little nervous my dog decides to take it out one day.

Anyone care to answer this one?

The wood in my living room is a good 2" higher than the tile in the adjacent rooms.

I would assume these devices can't make it up something like that and would be rather pointless to have if you have something like that.
