Is that a subtle way to say we of tOT will buy a luxury watch but then won't be able to buy clothes? I think it is.

IMO, we've seen a spike of interest in folks that are new to the market and have some cash (or credit) to spend and the SS Rolex's fit that 10-12k spend. As you stated, the grey folks have rushed the AD's by (probably) offering 1-2k over MSRP under the table and getting the high ROI SS pieces off the floor. I am wearing a 226659 right now and walked into my AD asking for this reference specifically and he walked out the other door with it in the box. Point being, if you're a good client of the AD they are more likely to get you what you're looking for.
I am just irritated walking into an AD and the case being empty and having to ask for what is actually in stock. Really want the 228239 after Patek changed up the bezel on the Calatrava, not a fan of changes they made.

It is a little smaller than yours but one of the only Rolex watches I would wear in colored gold is the 126655

Clarke's Jewelers in Shreveport has posted multiple Rolexes on their FB in the past month, including the Submariner, Air King and GMT Master II. They don't come out and say they're in stock, so maybe it's just a bait and switch

Yuuuup. Lived 27 years on this earth. Only time I wore a watch was when I got a sweet arse LSU watch for my 12th birthday. Never been a watch guy.

The FF was the first modern dive watch released the Submariner was released within a couple of months. Not suggesting either is a copy of the other. They both were originally designed from a list of criteria from the French Combat Swimmers corp. So in essence a captain and lieutenant in the FCS were largely responsible for the design of the modern dive watch back when watches were often designed for jobs not just jewelry.
Don’t forget to mention the “pre submariner” the Rolex Turn O Graph 6202. Which was also waterproof to 50 fathoms.

Simply demand outstripping supply. Most of the SS professional models are worth 50 to 100% more than retail.
Serious question. Do you really think demand is outstripping supply? Particularly in a world where luxury watches...and watches in general appear to be becoming less desired?
IMO, Rolex might be trying to keep their brand from being diluted to some degree. The Submariner is the most popular of all of Rolex's watches. And for good reason. It is a great watch. But is it more "desirable" if every ding dong realtor or cheesy used car salesman is rocking one? Rolex may be saying we only want the "elite" to wear them because they want their brand image to be "elite".

The "impossible to get" idea drives more demand because for some "the flex is worth the squeeze for some" to butcher a phrase.
It actually turned me off of the Submariner. I like it and still do. But I wasn't going to wait 2-3 years just for the "opportunity" to be chosen by an AD to buy one and I wasn't going to overpay on the grey market. I ended up getting Omega that I really liked. And if I was being honest, probably liked better than the Sub. The reason I was going to get the Sub was it's "timeless" appeal. Kind of like a classic tux. It doesn't go out of style. But at the end of the day I am more than happy with my choice in the Omega....

I really wanted one but I'm not going to wait two years for it

They do limit supply for this reason. They are also trying to get rid of the quantity of dealers by charging ridiculous dealer fees. They are going to be opening up more rolex stores around the country and getting rid of dealers in these areas. Finally they are heavily going after the secondary market by taking away dealer licenses if they find watches going secondary in certain time frames
