Festo has built miniaturised robots before, but nothing quite like these birds, which are able to flutter through the air, gliding and even directing themselves thanks to a radio system.

Officially called the BionicSwift, the next generation robot is able to fly thanks to ultra-lightweight artificial feathers.

The BionicSwift weighs just 42 grams and is capable of flying indoors along a programmed path for roughly seven minutes. (video in link)

This would come in handy on a slow day during dove season.

Can't eat them, but would provide entertainment.

Don’t some crazy people believe all birds are drones spying on us?

The firm acknowledges that the robo-birds don't have any business applications yet, but hopes one could be found in future.

The military and intelligence community can probably suggest a few applications if you made them look more like real birds.

I can't imagine them flying outside where even the slightest Breeze would disrupt their flight and have them crashing into things or just falling out of the sky.

That's absurd. Most of the birds need to be real for the drones to fade into the background and not be noticed as they spy on you.
