Wow, this is one of those things you read and it kicks you in the nuts … you don’t want it to be true as reality is setting in. Billy and I grew up on the same street in Metairie (Beron) and were best friends growing up. We lived 5 houses apart and played sports together at Delta Playground. Families vacationed together and did dozens of fishing trips together. Billy and I were on the same swim and diving teams at Lynn Park. By age, we were 14 months apart as Billy graduated from Runnel in ‘84, and I graduated from St. Martins in ‘86.
We both went to LSU as Billy managed The Caterie and knew everbody. Such a good dude that was a pleasure to be around. In the early 90’s our lives grew apart mainly due to careers and eventually starting families. Even though I settled down in Lafayette, I would visit his restaurant Ragusa’s monthly which was next to the old Massey’s on Severn. We both had a love for food and cooking as Billy shared with me his artichoke bread recipe. Every time I fix it, I always think of Billy
Billy’s daughter Brooke was his world. He was so proud when she graduated from LSU as they spent lots of time together doing LSU things. When Billy was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in January 2020, I made a special trip to visit him. He kicked cancers arse , but it took a toll on his health. We last spoke 6 months ago and planned to get together for some good Cajun and Italian groceries. I have tons of memories from the Big Ragu as they are all positive. Never heard anyone say a negative thing about Billy. He always went out of his way to make sure others were taken care of. 55 years young, gonna miss you the whole world brother … RIP as prayers sent up for Billy’s parents, his brother and Brooke. We definitely lost a great dude and huge LSU fan. This is gonna be a tough one to process .

Thx bother I appreciate it. Everybody growing up from age 8 yrs to 18 yrs old has 2 or 3 best friends. Billy was one of mine as I have countless memories of our youth. Seems like yesterday we were innocent kids hanging out at the swim club or sharing rounds of beers at The Caterie. 55 year old guys aren’t supposed to pass away this young.

Well said !That truly sums up what kind of person he was. He graduated from Rummel with my brother. Knew him since I was a kid.

Thats a name I haven’t heard in a long long time. RIP Billy.
I swam with him 45 years ago at Lynn Park with coach Bill Babcock.

Your post is a good reminder to appreciate every moment we spend with those few friends who have been part of our life, for most of our life.
Sorry for your lose and thanks for sharing.

We are probably the same age, grew up near one another, and know each other from LP. Likely swam on the same relay teams. Bill was definitely the HC and before that was Janice Stedman. The Lynn Park Sharks ... we would swim against other clubs in the summer: Bissonet-Maned Downs, Sunrise CC, Metairie CC, Paradise Manor, Beach Club, Lakeside, etc... 45 yrs ago would have put me at 9 yrs old. When I come in Saturday for the service, I'll go eat at Come Back Inn to remind me of my innocent youth.

I agree 1000% brother. Crazy how time flies, especially the older we get. Seems like yesterday many of us were at LSU partying like rock stars. The we entered the real world, got married, changed jobs, had kids, and there goes 20+ years of your like. Will be good to see many old friends on Saturday; however, burying one always sucks. Will definitely make it a point to maintain contact with friends, even if it's a simple phone call to say "hello, I'm in town let's do lunch" 1-2 times per year.

Got Blaze - It just hit me that I ordered some seasoning from you last year and I remembered the name on the email. I looked at the name and was like nah that cant be the same B I swam with from Lynn Park and Bolts. I guess it was you after all. I’m R. Smith btw
I hope all is well
