My grandfather, a WWII vet, loved HH and MASH (set during Korean War). Growing up, I watched those shows and several other shows set during various wars with him. I miss those days.

All the actors playing Germans were Jewish and deliberately made the Germans as buffoonish as possible.
John Banner was an Austrian lawyer before emigrating to the US. He lost most of his family in the Holocaust.
Werner Klemperer was the son of a famous German orchestra conductor. His family fled Germany when he was a teenager. He graduated from Hollywood High and IRL spoke English with a flawless American accent.

The only 2 Hogan’s Heroes cast members to serve in the US Army during WW2 were the Germans- Klink and Schultz
How about that???

He was also in an episode of Gunsmoke IIRC.

In the B&W pilot, Klink is more like the Otto Preminger character in Stalag 17: stern and more antagonistic toward Hogan. However for the series this was changed to the buffoon we all know and love.
Burkhalter was a competent military man, and Maj Hochstetter was an outright villain. They weren't naturally buffoonish -- Hogan made them look like buffoons.
The German characters represented various levels of German society
Hochstetter - Nazis
Burkhalter - military
Klink - bourgeoisie
Schultz - peasants

My Grandmother complaining about my hard of hearing Grandfather, "He only wears his hearing aid for church, Shriner meetings, and Hogan's Heroes."

Tribute Video To Louis LeBeau.
Not a fan of the song used in this but he put together a nice montage of clips.
The chemistry between he and John Banner was priceless. At times you could see Clary visibly cracking at Schultz.
RIP to a true survivor.

Matthau was looking to take it, but Jimmy Stewart talked him out of it. Stewart and Matthew served in the 453 rd bomber wing in WWII and he credited Stewart with keeping him and others alive and in one peice.

I wonder what percentage of today's pampered hollywood crowd are Holocaust deniers. RIP Mr. Clary.

There is a YouTube video in which these two men, dressed in formal wear, sing a Christmas song together. To think these two, being such great comedic actors, also have the ability to sing is amazing.
A good watch if you are so inclined.

Klemperer was a kid from Los Angeles for all intents and purposes. Met him by accident out there at a lunch spot one day on the way to Dodger Stadium. Did not realize I was standing next to Colonel Kline until he started talking. There was no German accent, of course, but the voice was familiar. My brother actually picked it up after taking a look at him. He said, " I know you must get this from time to time , but you look like Colonel Klink"
He chuckled and said, " I am Colonel Klink, Werner Klemperer, nice to meet you."

Klink took the role with the stipulation that the Germans could never "win" in an episode.

Think that was one of Hogan’s wives irl, also the guy you posted above is still alive but not an original cast member

HH trivia: Andrew Carter (Larry Hovis) was always seen in Hogans Heroes wearing gloves. Not to give the appearance of being cold, rather to cover his wedding ring which he refused to remove during episode shooting. Soldiers in WW2 POW camps did not wear rings for fear of confiscation or used by the enemy for threats against the soldier's family.

Use to love that show. If the German's had been that Dumb WW2 would have lasted 9 days
