This is a long game for the left. This won't end until all white historical figures are deemed offensive and not worthy of display. I mean, they're even exhuming bodies and relocating them for Christ's sake.

I'm sure there are a lot of things in DC that can be tied to racism and torn down.

You think those two are safe?

They'll be deemed unworthy and offensive soon enough.

99% of the people with a strong opinion about a statue either way are typically full of shite.

Statues are pieces of art that weren’t even in most people’s minds until a few years ago. The way that they’re talked about now is like people go every Sunday to worship the Robert E Lee statue.

Washington monument and Jefferson monument are absolutely next.

The only white person that won't be considered offensive is Lincoln, but it wouldn't surprise me if he makes the list

So if we decide to go tear down a MLK statue just because we find it offensive then we would be called every name in the book. My point here is that why are these people making the rules?

That's kind of my point. No one in New Orleans gave a shite about Lee Circle either. It was a tourist attraction. Then it becomes "offensive" and the other side acts like they're untouchable. The whole thing is asinine.

I do believe we should keep the iconic ones such as the Lee Circle statue in a secure place though. It’s history like or not and you shouldn’t just discard it.

agreed, put it in a museum.

but let me make a distinction here - this is not discarding history, and to assume so is to confuse history and historical memory.

this does not excise lee from the history books or historical narratives, only a memorial that commemorates lee's memory in a particular fashion. that is what is being removed, and that is what was removed at lee circle as well. history persists, but a particular memorialization, commemoration, and indeed glorification of that historical memory is removed.

People look for logic in the world. People want to refute stupid things like taking statues down as if that actually solves any problem.

The good thing about erasing history is that it ensures it’ll never be repeated!

You do realize that this man lived almost 150 years ago and attended West point and had to choose a side. It was a civil war and people made choices they didn't want to have to make. He was from Virginia and he chose the South. Unfortunately people like yourself have no clue what its like to defend and fight for a country.

I don't care if they tear down Lee. I just hope something else goes up. I'm a fan of statues and monuments.
