This thread is a great highlight of just how stupid and short sighted a decent percentage of the OT is.

Good for them but it is sort of bogus.

It doesn't cost the school much to add a student once they have covered their fixed cost.

I remember when my kids were college shopping some of the private schools would offer them "scholarships" that were really just lower tuition. It's like shopping at Dillards with some of those schools---don't pay full price, they will put it on sale next week.

Looks like it's close to $6 billion

you do realize that students have a CHOICE of where they want to go to college, right?

"successful" parents can send their kids to a multitude of colleges, no further than 3 hours from Rice, that are just as good, if not better, in some programs...

It's a message board, who gives a frick about perfect grammar. You're just mad because I pointed out the poor reasoning in your original post. Makes sense to resort to calling out poor grammar when you're wrong.

No, you pointed nothing out. Dumb kids don't get into Rice, therefore your response is worthless.

When you call people "dumb asses" on a message board, it's probably a good idea to avoid appearing as such.

Didn't say they were dumb. However, because they weren't smart enough, or to lazy, to obtain other scholarships is not punishing the successfulness of the parents. If you as a parent don't want to pay 40k, then don't. There are other schools for less cost.

By making $215,000 you'll be on the hook for the $40,000 or so annually that it actually costs. More punishing of the successful.

Feel free to make less and have your kids qualify.

Right up until these grads enter the job market and employers start questioning the quality of a non-scholarship free degree. EDIT: Apparently the board is full of idiots who think that a business can slash its costs and keep the same product quality.

Oh dear Lord this thread is getting more embarrassing the more I read.

Again, Rice doesn't accept kids who aren't intelligent. Apparently though, if your parents earn more than 200k you have to be brighter than the kids who have family income less than 200k or you pay full tuition. I realize one can go elsewhere.

Like the previous poster said, feel free to make less money if you want your kid to qualify for need-based aid.

so you are admitting that you know that these so called "successful" parents are WILLINGLY CHOOSING to take on that price/financial situation... you are readily admitting that you know that this is not being FORCED to take this on, in any way, shape, or form... am i reading this correctly?

Studies suggest the kid from a family making 200k will have more opportunity and a better education on the whole than the kid from a family making 70k. If the academic resumes are the same, you're likely getting a better student taking the kid from a middle class family than the kid from a higher income family.

Is there anything to suggest that the academic standards are in any way being changed?

The value of a college degree isn't directly tied to the dollar cost of the degree though. The prestige of an institution is greater than tuition. It's the quality of the faculty, buildings and amenities. Along with entrance requirements and acceptance rates.

Tremendous school. Great area as well. Really good opportunity for some kids who can capitalize on this offer.
