Rice must have a hell of an endowment.
Which is strange because Asians are not usually well endowed

Good for them. That is awesome.
Right up until these grads enter the job market and employers start questioning the quality of a non-scholarship free degree.
EDIT: Apparently the board is full of idiots who think that a business can slash its costs and keep the same product quality.

They have a 5 billion dollar endowment. Just dropping that in to an average mutual fund produces 350 MM a year. They will survive.

An employer who questions the quality of a degree from Rice is an employer who will be out of business in a few years.

You really think this is going to damage Rice's academic reputation? The kids still have to get accepted and pass the classes.
Potential employers would have to discount ALL Rice degrees without knowledge of whether or not an applicant qualified for this program.

Why would the employer care how a candidate’s degree was paid for?

What about poor income students?

By making $215,000 you'll be on the hook for the $40,000 or so annually that it actually costs. More punishing of the successful.
You're making a weak argument, IMO.
Agreed. If your parents make 215kand they have to pay 40k for child to go there....then their kid is a dumbass and should have either did better in school or went somewhere else cheaper.
That's not punishment for success. You have to measure the success of the student, not their parents. If your paying full price to attend then you're child was not successful.

They’ve been going for free.

You're making a weak argument, IMO.

Well, the value of a degree from Rice just dropped precipitously.

$5 billion endowment. In addition, what percentage of their student enrollment will ultimately be impacted by this plan? Students from families making less than $65K were already attending for free.
How much tuition were the students from families in the $65-$130K range paying before? At Harvard, those families generally pay no more than 10% of their annual income.
Also, they will be increasing the number of graduates with no student loans. These students will be in a better position to give back to the university earlier than they would if they had to worry about paying off loans.
You think Rice did this without looking at all the angles and figuring out the economic impact? Who's the idiot again?

I have a sneaking suspicion you have no idea what you're talking about.

These people were not going to rice. I hardly think adding a handful of merit based scholarships is going to drastically reduce the quality. If anything rice just got a lot more competitive
