Revisiting Robbie Maddison's, 2009 Red Bull New Year's Eve jump in Las Vegas

from 2007-2011 Red Bull ran a live, New Year's Eve special on ESPN that featured wild stunts, but this had to be the most dangerous one.
the initial 96 foot jump to the top was crazy enough, but the 80 foot (10 stories) free fall on a dirt bike from the top is just insane
it's said that Red Bull paid him $2M for this stunt, and Maddison said that no amount of money would get him to try a free fall stunt like this ever again.

On 1 January 2009, live on ESPN, Maddison and his Yamaha YZ 250 motorbike successfully jumped 96 feet (29 m) up onto the Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris Las Vegas and then descended an 80-foot (24 m) drop off the monument safely to ground level. Maddison broke his hand and had a gash to the bone in the webbing of his left hand after the free fall.

Gotta give him props. Cool as a cucumber doing both.

Yeah, once you have two million in the bank your mindset changes.

He fricked up his hand/wrist and almost overshot the ramp on the way down. That's why he won't do it again. Skin torn straight off the hand.

Yep, was a little too fast off the roof, but it's not like you can easily practice that

Insanity
I remember watching this live thinking I was going to watch someone die

Same
Maddo is a legend though. My favorite was the football field jump.

The craziest was the guy who jumped out of the plane without a parachute.

Just that image gives me anxiety

he has said in interviews that he was bit fast on the drop, but again like you said, how exactly do you practice that?

I don't know how to ride a motorcycle. I wouldn't try.

You probably get nerds to do calculations then practice driving off a mock "roof" that doesn't have a big drop to try to get the proper speed down. Then just go from muscle memory on the day of.

As close as he came to over shooting the ramp, if he actually did, you would hope that his gear would help but free falling from that high would have probably killed him
