re: "Revenge Porn" - Should this be a crime?

The article says "most" of these women had their emails hacked. How specific is the criminal statute? Does it require intent? What if it is sent to me and MY email is hacked and the pictures are compromised? This is why laws with very specific protected classes (especially this class because of the very nature of the situation) can be very scary.

And, let's assume the person did intend to post the pictures as a means to embarrass the woman. Why is this type of behavior one we want to criminalize as a society? You have to get down to what we're trying to prevent, or what we're trying to protect.
I see two competing ideas: sexual freedom and personal responsibility.

from a feminist perspective, this seems like it's proclaiming women as inferior and weak and running for protection OF their sexual freedom.

Seems like a strong step towards 'Stalking'.
A mandatory 'strong warning, with background check, along with restraining order, on the person posting personal pics as an online attack could be a good start?

I'll be the first to say it.
This thread is useless without pics.

If one were to enter amateur big tits into google and look at images... three of my exes are in the top 75.
I did not put those pictures there. I consider it trashy that they are there.
If I was not married, I would not even associate with said women because of this.

huh?
that picture is the property of the person posting it, at that point.

Well, this law seems to be primarily backed by feminist reasoning. Even if the law isn't DESIGNED to protect women, it will be most definitely APPLIED in that fashion.

Just throwing this out there, but what if you were to reverse the genders.
I remember an Asian South Carolina fan who had pics of his tiny ween distributed to several other posters after he sent them to Coastie or some other female poster.
The pics were passed around primarily for embarrassment purposes, so would that give him a legal (third) leg to stand on, supposing "Revenge Porn" were illegal at that time?

The law would apply to both, but I think it's important to know why it's origins matter (women being exposed by a-hole boyfriends).
Remember, when you make something a crime, you're saying society does not approve of what you're doing, and that such actions are detrimental to civilized living. You have to search deeply into what you're trying to prevent, trying to protect, or both.

this is more of the "send nude selfie to boyfriend via text, and after you break up, he posts them online" type
havent read the whole thread so i dont know if this has been touched on
I know trust is a foreign concept on this board but if a girlfriend(im talking a serious one, not some 2 month bullshite) sends you pics of herself, she should able to trust you not to send them out when the relationship is done.

everyone should have watched more X-Files as kids

why?
In one case, the ex framed the video to make her seem like a predator.
In the other two, the exes "created online profiles about them, complete with their addresses and phone numbers, and actively messaged strangers, propositioning them..."
That should be illegal even without pictures.

I don't know, but if I was expressing what I thought would be private opinions only to you, it would be a crappy thing to do.

I get what youre saying but its too easy for the males to just say yea well you sent them out so its your fault if they get beyond the disgruntled exes possession.

that is obviously wrong (and almost assuredly opens him up to civil issues), but not responsive to the original point

well let's ignore nudes for a second
is it a crime to simply post a non-nude picture along with an address, phone number, etc?
impersonation/fraud is something else

nobody is saying that this isn't crappy
tons of things i find crappy are not illegal, though
