Since 1865, every conflict the US military has fought in has been on foreign soil… on virtually every continent… but we were fighting “globalization” then?

Thank you for you and your family’s service, but It’s the same as it ever was.

Only if they went combat arms. I'd find it difficult to encourage the Navy, with all the freaking preventable accidents. Preventing accidents underway should be the only priority of the Navy until the problem is fixed, not diversity BS.

Nothing. It makes me sad to type this but pretty much every conflict in my lifetime has been for money and to increase Lockheed Martin etc al.,'s stock.

I was young and naive and honestly frickin stupid. WMDs, mission accomplished, 'were gonna get Bin Laden!' who was hiding out in Pakistan pretty much the whole time, etc. Etc.

Friends dead so politicians could pad their pockets. Vast majority never gave a shite beyond that.

Then they throw the vets to the wolves, give them some cash for school or give them some disability moneys all of which is really to try and keep them from going postal.

If my kids want to serve well it's their choice and they may have good careers, I come from a Lt. Dan style long line of veterans all the way to the fricking Revolutionary war and the way I see it, if the CONUS isn't being invaded, then some politician is trying to make money.

I get the sense that's sort of the take of my military friends/family as well (combat arms if that's really what you want, otherwise no).

I suspect the idea being if you're wired like that it's the only place for you to thrive, but I'm speculating there a bit

I’m curious if they felt this way when trump was CIC… or is this just in the last two years?

I’m pretty sure I know the answer.

I retired some time ago. Did contract work after that for 15 and retired again. I'm not anxious to get shot at. Plus I'm too old for that and they used me up anyway. Aloha

That’s where I stand.

I'd really be speculating but I would think a lot of these folks would claim it was a downward trend that began well before Trump, and perhaps Trump just allowed some breathing room. Very anecdotal, but three of my closest friends all left under Trump and did so with a very dire view of the future. I don't think it really changed the trajectory that much from what I could discern.

I felt the same way then as I do now. I wouldn't go back and I will do by best to discourage my children to join.

frick this current political environment. I have a feeling that the chicoms would hand us our shite. One has to wonder why so many of our weapons are going to the ukes. Not only that, with a lot of our tech left in the 'stan, the chicoms have it, too.

Now, if it were more normal? Absolutely. Navy life wasn't bad at all, and got to see so much more than ever would have otherwise.

I'm 56 and retired in Dec 2017. I'm almost eligible to retire my other job now, so i'd be glad to retire and go back in.

The woke stuff doesn't float down the unit level as much as you read online.

If everyone about the rank of O-5 & E-6 retired plus all of civilians above GS-7 and equivalent pay grade within DoD.

Nope. Loved my time in and wouldn't trade it for anything, but I'm done.

We've had 30 years of Clinton and Obama progressivism diluting and destroying our military. I would not recommend either of my sons to look at the military if they were of that age now (they're 33 and 30, so past that point.)

Maybe… like you said it’s anecdotal.

It’s a fact that military recruitment/retention is harder when economic times are good… and the last decade plus has seen low unemployment (Covid not withstanding)… will be interesting to see what happens if/when times get harder. Of course, an unpopular war can shite on that real quick.

I think it’s fricking awesome that we have an all volunteer force… for 50+ years it’s been that way… but no one wants conscription… and the looming war with China is real.
