I don’t know, maybe something productive

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40% of federal workers are veterans, many of them disabled veterans. Almost every federal worker's job is to prevent contractors from stealing as much money as they can from taxpayers. They are regulators and administrators and inspectors and investigators...almost universally this is the work they do. They are the ONLY line of defense between the taxpayer and contractors fleecing the taxpayer. 30-40% of the people being fired and otherwise eliminated are veterans, many disabled veterans, who are performing some task which prohibits contractors simply reaching in the wallets of taxpayers and removing what they see fit. I get it, the post office is slow and the DMV is also...but celebrating veterans losing their jobs AND the removal of the one line of defense between taxpayers getting robbed by contractors is a seriously bad look, especially having just coming off a 20+ year war footing....

I would call that a blessing and not a bad thing. Enjoy life. You made it.

Common misunderstanding, federal employees do not get anywhere close to 100 percent. In this case, probably around 40ish percent. Don’t know why some keep thinking that.

Because it makes them feel like a victim. Its not close to 100%.

In this persons case if his highest 3 years of salary was $100K and he has 39 years in at 60 his annual gross pension (estimated) would be around $39,000 or roughly 39% of his high three year salary average. Thats a very generic estimate, it depends on a LOT of factors, but that is pretty close to what most people in a similar situation would see.

Surprised OP didn't hang on for that extra .1% times 30+ yrs since he doesn't seem eager to be free of work.

Elon got him

Elon hasn't gotten anyone not in a probationary status yet...this person chose to resign in exchange for 7 months salary and some perks related to healthcare etc.

In general, it's best to do so while you still have your health. I would pursue things you wanted to do but couldn't due to work and the activities will fall into place.

Doge has offered some sort of option for federal employees to leave. I’ve been told something like $100k by a federally employed friend of mine.

I believe Federal workers also have a retirement match to some degree? Maybe not amazing, but after 39 years most would have a pretty good amount. That plus the retirement package plus social security would get many close to 100%, then you throw in that you aren’t working anymore and either save more or can get a part time job.

DOGE has offered 7 months salary if one agrees to resign. For it to amount to $100K they're salary would have to be in the neighborhood of $180K a year which is $10,000 lower than the highest salary a GS employee can earn (rest of US). Less than 1% of GS Employees earn anywhere close to $180K a year. Most agencies are refusing to allow those who want to take the deal to do so because whatever mission they are working on will fail....which is the point. If you despise government and are of the opinion that government is unnecessary and evil when you get a chance to prove it you will...

At 60 unless he is disabled he is not entitled to social security. If he has 39 years in he probably does indeed have a significant amount saved in his TSP account but if he is 60 now and has say $1 million in that account it will last at his current salary about 6-7 years.

I did. I'm 6'2, 190 lbs. Deepsleep 1/2 mattress diagonally I can stretch all the way out. If the storage boxes are in I can still sleep back there just not stretched out (if at a truck stop or Walmart). Learned I can sleep anytime, anywhere even if it's 100 degrees out.

I plan on retiring at 50 and can’t wait.

Haven't been following the story? They are also firing all new employees still in a probationary status. The next generation is being fired LOL....

It seems that way but it will soon come crystal clear just how more money is being stolen when there are fewer regulators, inspectors and investigators. Federal contractors are salivating at the thought.

Govetnment agencies run by Government employees steal far more than contractors.
Take a look at GSA for example. Lavish parties, ridiculous "conferences ", travel and time card fraud....

Throwing shade on contractors is pretty ballsy considering that contractors actually do the work for an agreed upon price and there is almost no opportunity to "steal:" anything.

As to your assertion that it takes 30-40% GS employees for contractor oversight, well, I'll just let that ridiculous statement stand.

DOGE is currently abolishing OPM and they should go after GSA next.

It is amazing that anyone competent works directly for the federal government.
There are some good, dedicated employees, but they are few and far between.

The majority of the good ones get snapped up by...

Contractors.

That was one of my goals, to shower every day. Which I managed to do for the most part.

I joined Anytime Fitness, there's lots of these locations even in small towns. Heard of Ely Nevada? In the middle of nowhere. They have a great gym there. I'd use them or I'm a member of the YMCA here in Virginia, there's always these in bigger towns / cities.

But if I was way off the grid I have a 4 gallon pressurized water tank, hitch mounted, that I could shower from. You learn to get good at finding free water out West.

Go play golf and walk the course when you play. Your golf game will improve and you'll get in great shape.
