eh, the two weeks period is fun for me. 2 weeks of IDGAF.
I’ve wanted that my whole life but never worked out.
Last time I changed jobs 10+ years ago, I was in technology at a school district and my interview process had lasted 2+ months. Finally was able to put in my 2 weeks, 2 weeks before school started. Never would have quit a job under those circumstances.
So I was scrambling till 7:30 PM to make sure everything was ready for school to start the next Monday.

We're on the opposite side this week. Had to let three people go.
Maybe I'm a softie but I absolutely hate having to let people go. I agonize over it.

When I said no they then tried to ask me to create a "manual" of all of the things that I did in my job.
I had a company ask me for this 2 days before the end of my 2 week notice. I turned around and asked for an extra 2 weeks of pay as severance. They agreed. Funny thing is I already had a manual created that they forgot about. So I surfed the internet for the last 2 days and forward along the manual the last 5 minutes there once I saw the check hit the bank.

I informed my current employer in March, that I would be leaving in July-August time frame, to allow them the opportunity to go through the hiring process and have time for me to train the new person.
4 months notice seemed like a fair amount t of time. I have worked for this company for 12 years, and am keeping my end if the deal up, perform my job everyday without fail.
They have been known to withhold people's vacation time at the end of employment, so I am taking 2 days every 2 weeks to burn through what I have left so not to lose the days, it's considered part of my compensation package.
Also, it's been 12 years since I submitted a resume, interviewed or even looked for employment.........shite has changed a lot!

Had to? Did you have vesting options?

In my industry it takes 18-24 months to fire people. They have to be put on a formal performance improvement plan for all the legal basis covering so if you get fired you shouldn't be surprised or expect extra pay.

These sort of threads make me reflect on how fortunate I've been to have my employment history.
Started my first "real" job during the Carter administration, moved to my present (and final) firm in the first Reagan administration.

Yes, but i promise you it is far, far easier to look for a job- and you have way more leverage- now than in 2010 .

I'm not really sure.
I have all the time off I want and still enjoy being engaged in my work.
I could have retired (financially) a while ago.
That's not the only metric for some people.

Last one I left, I had been there so long I knew every skeleton in every closet. They left me alone for the last two weeks and I did whatever the hell I wanted including not coming in for three days. Got paid for the whole two weeks.

Last time I switched jobs I did Jack shite for two weeks. Literally walked around the plant and did nothing. Talked to people and collected a paycheck. Got paid for two weeks of vacation and bumped the start date for my new job back by two weeks. It was pretty great

Thanks, that’s pretty much what i was getting at … we can jump thru all the hoops we want to justify it, but it makes zero sense for the expectation to be so one-sided .
It just depends on the situation. Show up to a job site high as giraffe balls or drunk? You don't deserve anymore pay from that day forward. The VAST majority of skill based jobs will afford you 2 weeks if it isn't for cause and their decision.

My last resignation I was asked to stay another month to help train some replacements. I asked new employer if that was alright. They allowed it so I sucked it up. Very uncommon in oilfield. Got laid off from new company 2 years later during covid. Old company hired me back in 2 months

Not sure exactly what skills ur referring to , but ive been in the white collar business world for the last 15 yrs or so and every single time ive seen someone let go, they are either fired, effective immediately or layoffs are announced, effective immediately.

I've never had to finish the full two weeks, but always give it along with a letter of resignation.

They ARE let go effective immediately, but, they are generally afforded the 2 weeks and any due vacation.

Had a guy resign right after Christmas that worked for me for almost 10 years. First five were pretty good. But he went off the rails after Trump got elected. Never knew how liberal he was until 2016. So I wasn't too upset when he resigned. Fast forward a few weeks after he left. Another employee moving into his office found this guys stash. Booger stash that is. Old baw apparently picked his nose and wiped them under his desk. Grossest thing I've ever seen. What 50 year old man does this???
