re: Back surgery Round 2, anyone else?
Posted by 2_4_LSU on 3/18/25 at 9:34 pm to BluegrassCardinal
1 surgery in 1990, L4,5 S1, discectomy and laminectomy, with 2 fractures. I developed traumatic arthritis and associated never issues after roughly 20 years. All treatment provided by USN and VA, including gabapentin prescription around 2008.
I have since weaned off the gabapentin, and use cumin black seed oil instead. I have significantly reduces issues with associated nerve pain after the change. Prior LE work, and from experience, some LE organizations see gabapentin as an indicator of METH use, because it increases and lengthens the effects of the bump for the addict. I try to avoid prescription medications as much as possible
As far as advices, limit pain medication, strengthen your core and maintain ROM, basically, stretch and exercise as much as possible, and limit dependence on prescription medications.
It works for me, but may not be for everyone.

Wasn't my intent to be preachy, and my child was in a school shooting, and I doubt every poster on here has had to deal with the after affects if the trauma.
But again, have a good evening, and I will return to anonymity. Y'all are doing just fine without my input.
You can check my post history, I have possibly 14 post now, I believe, 2 of those previous were on similar events.

I can't imagine the reasons for the downvotes on my post.
I don't think I said anything earth shattering, or offensive.
Really doesn't matter since I feel confident not 1 who down voted has a similar experience, but it's all good....and validates most of the latter part of my post....y'all have a good evening.

Long time member, but I rarely post. I can speak from the viewpoint of a parent who's child was at school during a school shooting.
Small town rural Tennessee school, not a large number of dead or wounded, but tragic. The shooter lived, and was actually later released back into society.
I think some of the contributing factors are:
1. Deinstitustiinalizing mental health patients.
2. The release of the movie "Natural Born Killers", which glamourized the thoughts of killing sprees.
3. The proliferation of RPG shooter games on game consoles.
Since the 90's, our society has been increasingly polorized politically, the nuclear family has dissolved greatly, and people increasingly need to be right, and get 1 up on whomever they disagree with. Couple this wirh being desensitized by the failure of parents to control the outside influences, cultural influences, and a lack of respect for human life, and people, specifically children do not know or care about the consequences of their actions, and have no remorse for their actions, because they haven't been taught right from wrong.
I know, long post, and of course it's my opinion, and those are like butt's, everyone has 1 and they all stink.

She fully supports law enforcement, has more conservative views than one would imagine and is raising her children much as she was. She is all that I could hope my child to be, respectful, responsible, and I am proud to say the product of good a good upbringing.

As a parent of a child in a school shooting, (my child was un injured) in the early part of the century in the state of Tennesee, I feel I can speak to this from the view point of experience. My child was 14 years old when the shooting took place.
She is a well adjusted adult, with different political and religious views than my own. She is, and was at the time of the shooting gay. She is a conceal carry permit holder, votes democratic, but because of our ability to respect each others opinions, we remain a loving and caring family. She understands that the weapon used was not the cause, and can easily assign blame to the mental state of the person who decide to bring the weapons to the school. I can only hope that eventually, as a society we all view these events as clearly as she is able to.

I informed my current employer in March, that I would be leaving in July-August time frame, to allow them the opportunity to go through the hiring process and have time for me to train the new person.
4 months notice seemed like a fair amount t of time. I have worked for this company for 12 years, and am keeping my end if the deal up, perform my job everyday without fail.
They have been known to withhold people's vacation time at the end of employment, so I am taking 2 days every 2 weeks to burn through what I have left so not to lose the days, it's considered part of my compensation package.
Also, it's been 12 years since I submitted a resume, interviewed or even looked for employment.........shite has changed a lot!

That wouldn't even get him started. I just have to find a way to get some aggressiveness in him. Think "Blind Side", kid is super nice, and worries about hurting the other kids. None of them even come up to his arm pit.....teachers mistake him for a student teacher at times

re: Microdiscectomy for sciatica / herniated disc
Posted by 2_4_LSU on 12/2/21 at 6:44 pm to Palmetto08
Had Discectomy and Lamnectomy in 1992, neither were micro. Went in unable to straighten my right leg, and unable to lift more than 8 pounds. Because they were full blown surgeries, I had 2 weeks down time, then 4 weeks PT. Gained nearly full ROM and full use of right leg. Absolutely no restrictions on my activities after recovery. Military surgery performed at NAS Jacksonville FL.
Never regretted having the procedures done.
L4,L5 S1 with 2 broken vertebrae, and broken bone inpinging on the sciatic nerve, created scar tissue, which is the largest issue I have now along with arthritis.

Try valerian root at bedtime, takes about 30 minutes to get really sleepy.
Supplement it with a small dose of magnesium every 3rd day.
Was on Ambien for 12 years, had to stop, so researched sleep aids, and this is hands down the answer.
It smells kind of bad, but no real taste. If you want to sleep, at least give it a try.
