Actually some modern subs have a titanium hull that is resistant to saltwater corrosion and can dive very very deep- like 4000 feet+. The last boat to do it was a Soviet Alfa class sub on a test drive.
However that rust bucket is anything but modern.

Seriously, is it stupid to think the media and the response to media reports related to NK is giving them too much credit? The size if it is like a 6th of Texas. Everyone there is stupid & has no clue what is going on in the world. It really doesn't have any allies. At one point China was somewhat of an ally, but I think the relationship between the two nations isn't that strong.. Plus, you think China is going to risk anything to back North Korea, which is ran by a short, fat dude with a fricked up hair cut and has a man crush on Dennis Rodman?
If they are that big of a threat to the world, then why not do to them what we did to Iraq? The justified reason for going into Iraq was because they supposedly had WMD.. Well NK doesn't even hide the fact they have WMD, there isn't much of a threat if their government was taken out.. The people who live there are so use to being told what to do and how to live, they will all be standing around like deer in headlights so it could then be turned over to South Korea and become one country.. Korea. And then we don't have to be scared of this.
