I have a funny feeling he isn't looking for $80-120 per set tires.

The hardest thing about it is to get the tread rotation correct.

Most road tires are not directional (I can't remember a brand/model that is). The only directional tires have run into are MTB tires and they aren't universal.

Price for tires varies widely depending on the type (type of bike).

Hard to believe a guy would waste the time and money paying someone to change tires on a bicycle. Anyone who has kids has to do this a million times. I suggest going to Walmart or Academy and getting replacement tires (unless you need something higher grade), tubes and a tire changing kit. I held off on the kit for a while and just used screwdrivers but finally gave in. The levers that are in the kit make the job of removing the tire and tube even easier.

That just made me cringe!!!

About someone paying to have the tires done, I get it it is a skill many of us have. I probably change tubes 10+ times on the road in a given year.

The one thing I see here is 10 year old tires, which means the bikes are basically not ridden at all. It is probably a good time to have someone go over the bikes to make sure they are safe. The chains are probably dry, the derailleurs need adjusting as well as the brakes. The brake pads are probably hard as rocks.

Yeh, I wasted several brand new tubes due to putting holes in them with screwdriver blades.

That does make sense and although it would cost more than just the tire/tube replacements, the overall value would be better and the price they charge for the tire and tube installation would likely be negligible.

Most cyclists can change a tube during a ride in 3-4 minutes and be back on the road but if one hasn't done it they need to watch a video before they try, again while simple it isn't as simple as you make it sound.

It's pretty frickin simple. I was changing my own tubes and tires on bikes when I was in 5th grade. I can change a tube and inflate on the road in just under 5 minutes (I practice and time myself for races). You likely don't need new tires, just tubes.

Tires and tubes are going to vary price wise and a shop is going to not have the cheapest available. Like some have said, race tires and specialty tires like gatorskins easily run $80+ per tire. I would just go to Walmart, buy some cheap tires and tubes along with a set of plastic tire levers. They should have it all in the bike section there. Tire levers get the bead off of the wheel (youtube if you can't figure it out).

true story: i flatted during a cat4 race and didn't have an extra set on the sag wagon so i changed the tube myself and actually managed to NOT finish last in the race; i picked off 10-12 dudes that had fallen off the back.

ah, glory days.

It's very easy to change bike tires, easy enough that if you're not doing it yourself literally any bike shop will do the same job. Just go wherever is most convenient. But really you should do it yourself.

But they will take the time to make sure the stem lines up with the tire label.

There is no question the average person can teach themselves to change a bike tire/tube but again these are 10 year old bikes and I think they will need more TLC than just a tube change.

Nah, man! You gotta go with winter air for the next month or so. Then you can take it back to the shop and have them change the air out for nitrogen or summer air.

its literally nothing to it, if you can screw in a light bulb without needing directions then you can replace a bicycle tire yourself.

if you cant, then you are too stupid to ride the bike anyway

Agreed.
Hated them. Didn't crash as much in them as I have 30 years later!

Hell, very few can get to Cat 3 without them, much less Cat 2. I was just busting your balls, in my crew you aren't allowed to mention Cat 4/5 races, if it wasn't Cat 3 it was just a recovery day. Every day is a recovery day for me! I will also say today's Cat 4 is like the Cat 3s of my day. So many guys sandbag now. I did a mixed 3/4 last spring and a bunch of 4s were just walking away with it. The laps were short with a steep hill and they were hitting and sustaining the hill at over 550w every 180 seconds every freaking lap and they weren't even trying.

Don't trust any Joe Schmoe to change your tire. If it's one thing on a bicycle that you shouldn't skimp on is a tire change. Run if he doesn't take the seat off first. That's the key to a good tire change on a bicycle.
