and they have daily mileage limits
I checked into it, so not worth it, i'm shocked they are so expensive.
they are pretty pricey but in certain circumstances, worth it, an RV needs to somehow be added to the three F theorem

I have had a few people riding with me get motion sickness when riding in the back due to the the way the thing rocks.

As other have mentioned it is unsafe to be unbuckled and not just because of an accident.
And also, don't leave crap on counters like coffeepots, groceries, bourbon bottles, etc.
Those things become projectiles in a sudden stop.

I live in a RV full time with a 3 year old and a Great Dane. I love it, I'm getting relocated to Washington state in a month and I will be making the drive and taking my time. I recommend doing a little research before you jump into it but it will most likely be a good time.

Let me clarify- by "moving around in the back" I meant that they could get up and go to the bathroom, grab some Gogurts from the fridge, and go back to their car seat. No way in hell would I have them bouncing around in the back like its a romper room. It sounds like we should drive to Dallas (would have to do that anyways if we rented an RV), fly direct to Boise and rent an SUV.
Or you can make some calls and confirm some of the input from here instead of taking comments from a message board at face value. Be a freaking man.

If I had room (and money to burn) for one that goes in my truck bed, I'd get it. I'd rather drive places than fly

It's definitely cost effective, when you take into account flight costs, multiple nights in a hotel, taxi, or rental car. The only downside is the fuel costs.

much in the same way a yacht or private jet would be

Something most don't take into account- traveling in an RV can be a ton of work. It's more than just packing up and getting on the road. It takes time effort to make/break camp.
Depending on the size of the RV you may be limited on the places you can maneuver easily. Also, you have to remember that this would be your primary more of tranportation while on the trip unless they have easy access to Uber/Cabs etc. If you are at a campground and decide you want to go get dinner somewhere, or go check out something in the area, you will have to disconnect from power, sewer, etc.
IMO- not worth it. At the very least rent one for short weekend trip and see how it goes before traveling thousands of miles in one.

It's really not, unless you factor in convenience.
Not sure what the OP is planning on renting, but a diesel pusher, on it's best day, is only gonna get around 6.5mpg

Easy, killer.
I was just wanting to know if anybody has done this, and if so what was their experience.
I will do my due diligence checking out everything before I decide. This trip won't be until next May, so I have plenty of time to research all of my options.
frick- I spent about two weeks researching the best upright deep freezer, so I know not to rely on the OT as my sole source you dumb frick.

I didn't realize the title said "Please give me your opinion on me renting an RV for family vacation".

what size are you considering?
Keep in mind, you aren't gonna cover ground like you do in a car or SUV. Any RV is a bit more (mentally) to drive than a car.

With a truck bed one, you can just go, stop where you want, sleep where you want, and roll out the next morning. I can park in your hotel parking lot and go where you go. You can also get off the beaten path much further/easier than a regular RV.
Some people like to drive. Some people like to fly. Some people like to spend time in one place. Some people like cruises.
