Looking at a full size SUV rental in California. The taxes and fees added to rental rate are roughly 42%. WTF?

Cali taxes surprise you? Just kidding, that’s definitely crazy. But not surprising at all especially for a full size vehicle

We paid similar in Arizona a few years ago. Those fees are especially high renting from an airport branch.

The sales tax is 7.25%. Tourism fee 3.5%. Sounds like the rest is from the rental company.

Those fees are so you can have keys and a steering wheel.

I had taxes and fees out of the airport in Chicago late last year that were higher than the cost of the rental. Hotel taxes and fees are kind of the same.

I used to have to get a rental car about twice a month and could pick it up Friday afternoon and return it Monday morning for anywhere from
60-110 bucks total all inclusive depending on the week. This was back in 2018 into early 2019. Those days seem to be long gone.

Hotel in Atlanta tried to charge me $30 per day for parking. I took an Uber from the airport but they said that didn’t matter. In hindsight the $30 was not worth the time and aggravation it took to get it straightened out with the manager. My blood pressure was definitely up.

Where else have you priced rental cars recently? Before you start hammering California. Not saying you aren’t wrong on the taxes, just curious.

That's crazy. I used to travel a lot for work about 10-11 years ago. A rental would be $50/day in most places. Maybe $75 if you got the extra insurance.

Easiest source of funds is to tax rentals and hotels so the visitors pay.

In Bumblesticks, Oklahoma maybe.

Goofy-arse rental car prices aren't new. Ever flown to O'Hare or Boston-Logan? $100 per day is about the cheapest I've ever gotten out of Logan.

My rental from last week in Memphis
$108 rental (36/day)
$26 fuel
$50 tax

If it wasn’t for the fuel it would be roughly 50% tax (corporate rate)

Every city has different random tax too.

At least we have the comfort in knowing that our government will use 50% of that money to give it away to people in the form of entitlements.

The rental car economy is run by insane people and we're all trapped in their insane world. Try renting a car without reservation and not laughing when they tell you it'll be $500+/day without even a touch of blush.

Wasn’t bashing California. More so bashing rental car companies. Last car I rented was a few months ago when my flight from Denver to Huntsville was delayed and had to fly into Memphis and drive to Huntsville. SUV cost $372 for 1 day.
