How do these independent DMV businesses make their money?
Do they charge a fee in addition to the state fees ?
I went to the DMV this morning to renew my DL, and there were 50 people in line ahead of me, and I said F**k this and left.

Just do it online, I did it last week and had my new license in the mail a few days later. The hell with that going to the DMV shite.

I've been to the dmv one time in the last 15 years. Dumbass cocomo threw my license into a lake. Other than that, everything by mail.

If it's within the last 4 years of a new license you can renew it through the mail. After 8 years just go into an express DMV early in the morning and you're set.

I tried to go to one of those express DMV places in Metairie last week. They wanted to charge $25 on top of the state fees and their were still 15 people in line ahead of me.

I left and renewed online. Took all of 5 minutes and recieved my license in less than 5 business days.

Think my husband paid an extra $10 to get the business he needed taken care of. It was worth it to him to save the time.

Go right when they open. Most lazy unemployed people do it mid day because they don't like waking up early.

What were you thinking not renewing it online, ya schmuck?

I'm historically terrible about stuff like this. The fact that my license was expiring in 8 days was pointed out to my by the state trooper who wrote me a ticket for my expired inspection sticker, from May 2014. I'm getting better though, I caught my registration a few weeks before it expired and took care of it.

First, bite the big one.
Second, just found out I can't renew online, as I have a CDL.

Fee is how they make their profits.

Oklahoma uses "Tag Agents" who open store fronts and get a percentage on every auto tag they issue. Very similar situation. BTW Oklahoma license plates/tags (the little annual stickers)are based on vehicle value. The cheapest I had the 15 years living there was around $150/year and in the 1990's averaged $350/year.

The small bank I worked for was previously majority owned by a married couple. They sold when the wife got busted for skimming state money off her tag agencies she owned/operated and laundered the money through the bank.

Look for the same to come in the future to LA.

Only have to go to DMV if you are changing address when you renew.

I think you also have to go in person if your last renewal was done online or by mail. They make you go in and take a new pic every-other renewal.
