Sheriff Jeff Shaver's talking about Georgia's new hands-free cellphone law which goes into effect July 1 just across the Alabama-Georgia line.

"I want to make you aware of the new Georgia law, because we have a large number of Cherokee County citizens who work or travel frequently in Georgia," Shaver said, giving a run down on the new rule in a statement. "Under the new law, a person cannot operate a motor vehicle while operating a cellphone, holding a cellphone with your hand, or supporting a cellphone with any other part of your body in Georgia.

"Additionally, a person may not read, write, or send any text based communication, and a person cannot watch or record a video," the sheriff said.

Alabama has no similar law for handheld cellphones although texting while driving is against the law.

Georgia's law includes cellphones, personal digital assistants, computers, global positioning system navigation devices and any other device used for communication or that stores audio or video files. Exceptions under the Georgia law include in-car voice-based communication and navigation systems, Shaver noted.

Georgia joins 16 other states in the ban.

Elsewhere across the South, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Virginia have partial bans in place regarding handheld devices, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute. For Tennessee, use of handheld devices is prohibited in school zones.

All but three states — the exceptions being Montana, Arizona and Missouri — also have bans against texting while driving for all drivers, the institute's data shows.

Now all we need is to start enforcing the law.

I swear that distracted drivers are more of a threat to my daily life than drunk drivers. Put down the phone you magoos.

For people that use their phone to access Waze, that law is fricking ridiculous.

ETA: Based off the quotes, you could be ticketed for using Waze even while your phone is in a dash mount. Did they also outlaw Uber and Lyft? Because under that law, there is no way for the drivers to legally operate.

Umm, pull over, set the directions and leave it sitting there without touching it.

ETA:

Oh you mean to so you can alert to cops. Didn't think of that. That does suck, that is the only reason I use Waze...so other people can tell me where cops are

put in your destination before you start the car and prop your phone on the dash.

I hear what you're saying, but there is no need to frick with it while driving.

Waze doesn't want you operating it while driving either. You have to verify you are a passenger if you are moving.

IF you're car is on, technically you're operating it. This law needs more words if the quoted portions are it.

Only if you're typing in a new address.

ETA: It's OK to admit this law needs a little tweaking. As a motorcycle rider, I agree that distracted drivers are a huge problem. But that doesn't mean this law is perfect

This is true. But, I don't think using a phone as a phone is the problem.

Texting is a huge problem.

There’s no doubt. It’s gotten riducouly out of hand, and it’s not just dangerous, but it causes people to make ill advised decisions, or last minute decisions due to being distracted, which in turn also causes chaos during the day.

I’m not one for another law on the books, but damnit, this shite is out of hand, and dangerous.

The law reads that you can't hold the phone even at stop signs or traffic lights.

You can use a mounted phone for operations that require a single swipe or push.

Which would explain the huge delayed reaction with so many drivers when the light turns green.

You can use your phone safely while driving.

It is definitely the texting or reading emails that are the killer. And god forbid someone has to check Facebook while driving.

Why hasn't there been a class action lawsuit against Apple and all the other phone makers out there.

Laws like this are retarded. How does this stop someone from eating a 20 piece mcnugget meal, playing with their radio, turning around and talking to their kids?

There are already laws in every state that handle fault for incidents. Just enforce those properly.

Enforcement is always the issue. While I agree this is something that needs to be done, it will all depend on how busy law enforcement is on other problems. Don't expect too much out of this.

Yes, enforced by men who operate lap top computers, radar guns, laser guns, radios, and cell phones while they drive.

People sure do love having someone tell them what they can and can't do. I'll bet every cop in GA still gets to use his/her phone while driving. Plus that laptop they use to look up your license plate while they are behind you.
