Hands free laws are the biggest shams. It's not the fact you're holding a phone that distracts you. It's the fact you're making a phone call and your mind is distracted. Being hands free doesn't change that.

Most people drive with only one hand on the wheel. Are we going to pass laws saying you have to use both hands while driving?

Laws like this are retarded. How does this stop someone from eating a 20 piece mcnugget meal, playing with their radio, turning around and talking to their kids? There are already laws in every state that handle fault for incidents. Just enforce those properly.

None of those things have even come remotely close to the dangerous distraction that cell phones have when driving. Just the slightest bit of observation demonstrates that every time you get behind the wheel and get into traffic. Just glance at people as you’re passing them and you’ll be shocked how many have their heads in their phones driving down the road. It’s everywhere you go.

Laws like this are not needed

Insurance companies refusing to cover distracted driving will fix most issues

Disagree. Talking on the phone isn't hard while driving, texting is.

This is aimed at people using the phone as something other than a phone while driving IMO.

ETA:

And who doesn't have bluetooth these days? Do they even make cars without that capability anymore? It won't be long until 99% of vehicles on the road have that. shite, my 10+ year old 4Runner had it before I traded it in.

So a phone in your pocket or on your lap is now illegal in Georgia?

or send any text based communication

Text to speech and speech to text hands free is illegal.

Georgia thought it was a good idea to ban all civilian video recorders? frick that. I'd record every instance I had with police and have a gopro dashcam.

This law is asinine. Especially because it specifically includes aftermarket navigation systems and cell phone apps like waze and maps while excluding built in car navigation systems. What's the logic in that?

You are as distracted as them as you look at them. Ban looking at other drivers while driving.

Hands on 10 and 2 and look straight ahead!

This is just another money grab for the State and local governments. They couldn't give two shits about this unless they are getting paid.

The laws says you can't even hold a phone to talk on it. The bluetooth and wireless technology providers are in bed with our politicians.

Good.

I don't drive with 2 hands on the wheel and I know most people don't, but its important to have both hands free if you need them IMo.

Your support of this is pretty hypocritical based on a lot of your other posts.

I’m not distracted as I look at them. When I see someone driving erratic, swerving out of their lane, making last minute decisions, or doing something stupid, and not paying attention, which is all fricking day long, all I have to do is glance over and YEP... Head is firmly planted in cell phone.

It’s become a huge problem.

Yeah, I am not a fan of laws to have laws, but the distraction of cell phones while driving is putting a lot of people needlessly in danger, and it’s the sheer numbers of people doing it that is most disconcerting. I’m not for passing legislation to pass legislation and make ourselves feel like we did something, but I am for passing legislation that keeps people safe from people who don’t give a rats arse about the family of 4 going down the interstate as they do what fricking Amanda said in her text or, “Oh shite, what a funny snap chat by Rafael.”

Texting and driving is a problem but this law goes overboard. There is nothing wrong with using your phone while driving.

This is for revenue and nothing else.

I think this law is to allow LEOs more latitude in enforcement. It's not that enforcement wasn't possible previously, but this makes it easier to cite and punish distracted driving.

I'm sure revenue is something that will be appreciated, of course.

Yeah, there is, and it’s demonstrated all day long why it’s become a very real problem.

Most vehicles have blue tooth. It’s one of the best advances IMO... Just put the damn thing in a cradle somewhere, or on the seat, and keep it hands free. “ Call Bob Brown”. “Calling Bob Brown”.

I talk on the phone all day long for a living when driving down the road. This isn’t recreational for me. It’s business, and it can’t end or I won’t make any money, so I get the importance of the phone. It’s just the obsession with the other shite that is the real problem, and apparently people cannot help themselves, and so there is a very real threat to other people on the road because of it. If there’s an email that someone sends over that can’t wait, then guess what... it can wait, or they’ll call because it’s a real emergency. Same for texts.

Even a "no cell phone while driving" ban has a hashtag. Kind of ironic, don't you think?

Right, this law looks good on paper and all but going to be near impossible to enforce. You'll catch some here and there but its about impossible to put this thing back in the box at this point

I think that’s been proved. I’ve heard figures that your reaction time while texting and driving is four times slower than when you are drunk. And it makes sense. You usually have your head up while drunk.
