I lived a minute away from Rice village and loved it. Give it some time. Every new city takes some getting use to, but it will kick BR's arse once you settle in.

Any advice on places to live? Think I will rent for a while before learn the area. Looking at Rice Military/Washington Ave area. Want a manageable commute but don't want to live out in the suburbs.

Renting is a great idea. I never understand when people run out to an area this large with ZERO knowledge and buy a house.

I'm out in the burbs (Katy) if you have kids or are married and kids are imminent, the burbs are a decent choice. Katy especially for an energy corridor job. There is just such a tough time finding good schools within HISD. You will research like a bastard to get them into a good elementary and the middle school will suck.

But to try and talk you OUT of midtown or westU is silly. They are both great. One piece of unsolicited advice is NO to Spring Branch. It and The Heights are both gentrifying. The Heights is a nice area now. Spring Branch needs another 10 years.

EnergyCorridor is in West Houston. This area is dying with the exception of high end Memorial Area homes. Tons of homes all over the place. Research those CAREFULLY. And anything south of Westheimer is a No-Go. That is Alief Schools. Terrible.

Yeah, I would definitely rent until you get a good feel for the land before buying anything.

This.

Food options are off the charts here. Theater district if you like theater. But add to that music venues everywhere. From stadiums to small clubs. Every place you find in Houston will have a problem. Unless you are OT Baller rich and buy a house in River Oaks with a 2 digit address and pay to send your kids to a private school.

No you are not. Blue Oak would not be ranked in the top 100 BBQ places in Houston.

LSU should just built another tiger stadium in the Houston area and play half its home games there.

yeah, that's what I ultimately decided. I can afford to buy something decent, but I want to get my bearings first. I've never spent more than 2-3 consecutive days in Houston. Mostly rugby road trips.

You will see. I'm not hating on Blue Oak. I'm just saying your world is about to be rocked with insanely good, cheap BBQ.

They opened one near the Galleria too. Never been to that one, but been to the one in Vintage Park many times - it's fantastic. Chicken fried steak topped with poached eggs to go along with a Baltika - damn.

Steak trio for me. That place is top end to be honest.

I live in the Heights and work at 10 and Beltway. Pretty close to energy corridor.

If you want to live "in the loop" I don't see how you could live anywhere but the heights or Washington area for traffic purposes.

Buy in Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area. You won't regret the investment.

My buddy lives at Jackson hill, it's nice and because it's not one of the brand new places it is reasonable - $1,500/mo

Last time I was in Houston a couple weeks ago, I stayed at a friend's place in Oak Forest on Chippendale and Rosslyn. He paid like 650k for 2600 sq ft house. A little steep for me.
