Apparently this guy won at least the first time in France to get officially debaptized and removed from the Catholic Church under French law.

Said the Church was appealing, but I can't find an outcome on the case in appeals.

Interesting articles. I hadn't heard of anyone going through that much effort to be removed. Wonder how the appeal turned out.

For some weird reason, my mil thinks I’m catholic because I was a student at OLL during my elementary days. I grew up baptist, but I’m an athiest now.

People need to read the link. Excommunication doesn't mean the church doesn't consider the person a catholic anymore.

quote:
The first is the mistaken idea that, upon excommunication, a “person is no longer a member of the Catholic Church.” Actually an excommunicated Catholic is still a Catholic in rather the same way that a convicted felon is still a citizen. An excommunicated Catholic is simply (sadly, but simply) a Catholic who is excommunicated.

Right right, read the link. Check. I think point is what everyone is searching for and having trouble. Sans the blindingly obvious of which I'll credit Rando for finding.

When everybody on the planet knows the pedophilia history, going back centuries, can you keep your kids away from these pieces of human garbage?

Knowing that the church just moves them to Denver, or wherever, can you stop giving them money so that your hard-earned money is not buying them an airline ticket to their next hunting ground?

This is interesting. I’ve been researching Catholicism more lately, since my husband is catholic and I attend mass with him. I was raised attending united methodist church. I had no idea how...bureaucratic it is to become a catholic.

I understand the catholic view on marriage, but I’m very put off by the annulment process. In order for me to join (and for my husband to not live in mortal sin in the eyes of the church), the church has to notify my ex-husband and interview multiple witnesses to verify that my marriage was completely civil and not religious. This is incredibly intrusive, and something I have zero desire to dredge up.

I’m guessing that my unwillingness to do this is a good indicator that I’m not meant for the church. It’s just surprising and eye opening, since my church growing up wasn’t that exclusive. My H is supportive either way. I guess if he can’t be kicked out, then

Try an actual church and not a Catholic Church.

Sure, you can no longer attend church, or even become an atheists or Satanist, but the Church still counts you among its ranks.

Yep, they are just like the newspapers, they won't ever drop you from their ranks so they can inflate the ad rates in the weekly bulletin.

Well you can sign full term abortion law into affect and not be excommunicated so..

This is false. When you commit such an intrinsically evil act, you excommunicate yourself. The church does not have to officially excommunicate you. You have already excommunicated yourself. I would like the church to formally notify public figures what their actions have done.

I was told to send a letter taking my name off of their “books” or whatever they called it.

I suspect they didn’t because I still get a Christmas card.

I became a catholic (convert) and then threatened a priest. Could have been excommunicated but I went to confession just in the nick of time.

Nothing but ritual and dogma created by man. You have just been conditioned from birth to believe it.

You can leave the Church, you just have to get jumped out. At least, that's how I got out.
