re: Registering for the Selective Services…

Men currently have to actively register, but there's a bill in Congress that would automatically register men on their 18th birthday and wouldn't require your son to actively do anything. I believe the bill passed the Senate literally last week.
I'm pretty sure I filled out a form by hand at my high school in 2005. Now it's probably done online.

I've never had to register. Registration was suspended before I turned 18. When registration was reinstated, it was for men born after 12/31/1959, so I was already too old.

I wouldn't put it past the feds to try it but agree it would be a disaster for them. A few reasons:
1) Neither the progressives nor the Trump side supports a draft. Only the uniparty establishment would push for a draft and they would have no popular support.
2) Without popular support, they would have to go full authoritarian and round kids up. This would be a disaster and lead to mass civil unrest.
3) Culture has changed dramatically from 1975 or whenever the last draft ended. Many teens today are scared to drive a car, are often morbidly obese, many identify as gay, and the straight ones don't even want to date (according to recent polls). Helicopter parenting, COVID, and societal decline have done a number on them.
Even if you were able to round them up and force them into service, it would be a disaster trying to get them into a functional fighting force.
So I dont think there will be a draft. I do think they need to greatly increase the pay of serviceman and that will take care of the declining enlistment numbers.
A well paid professional military would be a very attractive career for the youth that aren't afraid of their own shadow. And much easier to deal with then trying draft the fatties and gays.
I should also mention the draft conspiracy theory that is floating around. Which is that the feds will eventually offer the 20 million illegals citizenship in exchange for joining the military.

I got a card in the mail, but that was back in the 80's.

What if it’s on our soil?
Don't see how that makes a difference.
If we are invaded, then we are in no holds bared war. From my point of view, the only reason you deploy a massive ground force with conventional weaponry is because you are fighting a controlled political war.
If we were in WW2 level war, the super advanced technology is getting deployed.
It's similar with pilots, I think what we are moving to is a battle group where you will have a human pilot in an F-35 flanked by several high-end group 5 UAVs as well as lower end UAVs, all communicating with each other via AI and with the various branches via JADC2 protocol.
Shield AI is already testing AI enabled fighter jets.

I hope you’re right. My grandpa and all his brothers were drafted, that would be ironic if that would happen to my boys, too
Never say never, but realistically it is not a necessity given the shift in the way we would fight an all-out war.
The difference in technology now vs WWII is likely bigger by several degrees of magnitude vs that WWII vs Civil War (as crazy as that sounds).

You have until 26 to register. And btw, no one has gotten prosecuted for this since the 80s. You just won't have any government benefits or ability to work for the government, student loans etc etc. If you don't sign up before 26.
According to law, a man must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Selective Service accepts late registrations up until a man reaches his 26th birthday. Failure to register is a felony and non-registrants may be denied the following benefits for life:

It’s something you should take the initiative to do but I believe we may have gotten something in the mail for the last son. Been a while so I don’t remember.

When I did it in 1983 I went to the post office. Kind of expected a marching band and some fanfare...all I got was a surly civil servant....
My son did it at the post office as well but I think he could have done it online.

It is required for some things like student loans and a security clearance to work for a contractor on a federal site or for the federal government.
No one in the military wants a conscripted military again. Professional military personnel are far more manageable than conscripted military members will ever be, no matter the circumstance.

With low numbers and many kids refusing to even consider it, don’t be so sure.
The people who manage the US Military are about as interested in going back to the days when part of the force was conscripted as most men are in taking a direct kick to the nuts. It is a damned site harder to manage people in the military who are there against their will than it is to manage people who volunteered....and the results will never be as good.

Doesn’t matter what the military wants or doesn’t want — or even *needs* — the populace wouldn’t stand for it.
This country is no longer anywhere close to being cohesive enough to be able to implement a draft.

The populace has never stood for it....there were always huge and destructive protests over it....still happened and would again if the government thought it was necessary....the people of this country have always been anti-war and anti-draft but we have been in a pile of the former and the latter existed until the military decided there was a better way to go about manning up. The military will do what the president says do and the people will go along with it or be shot like dogs in the street.

When I enlisted in 1983 (army), my recruiter told me that I still had to sign up for Selective Service.
I don't see how this would ever be the case. Your first enlistment is for 8 years. Doesn't all have to be full active or active reserve, but you are placed in Inactive Ready Reserve status for the remaining time which they can call you up at any point. Once that time is up you don't owe them anything, but you could volunteer again if you wanted.
