I have an open top freezer in the garage, so I don't need a ton of freezer space and we went with the French door. A lot more room in the fridge, only downside is the ice makers on French doors are usually pretty low capacity unless you get one with a double ice maker

I didn't realize this. There's 5 people in my house. We definitely use a good bit of ice.

Ours does have a spot in the freezer to dump ice in for more capacity, but with a family of 5 and a single ice maker you will run out after everyone fills their glass once. I usually keep a bag or two in the outside freezer.
Check out lowes/Home Depot for clearance items you can get for cheap.
Stay away from Samsung. I know people who have no problems with theirs but people I've talked to at appliance stores have told me that they are the most returned units they sell

Yup... Only drawback I can complain about. Of course it's only he wife and I... I generally have enough freezer space except when the St. Louis ribs and briskets go on sale. 
I will tell you this.... If you are in BR, the only 2 places I know of that actually carry in stock items are stantons and olindes. Big box joints have to order from their warehouse. I've had good experiences with the Stanton folks.

I have a LG french door. The 30cf one and the ice maker is low capacity. Sucks too.

I've got a French door and I like the space. With a side by side, you can barely if at all fit a pizza box or tray on either side (fruit tray, sandwich tray for parties, etc). If you don't entertain, a side by side will probably be ok. My French door fridge has a 'quick ice' option that helps make ice a little faster. I just bought this for a house that I'm flipping- around July 4, it's was $998.

French door, because the refrigerated stuff is easier to get to. I picked one with the ice maker in the freezer section. Ice makers in the door just have crapped out on me too many times and are damn expensive to fix. I do have a filtered water dispenser in the refrigerator section but you have to open the refrigerator to get to it. It's a configuration I'd buy again.

I have Samsung. The freezer is so much more organized and fits more the way you load things in there. Fridge seems to have more space as well. Love mine. Second best investment weve made behind king size bed lol

Bending over is required to retrieve out of the French door models. Always a plus.
