Right. This is the actual tradition, from what I have been told at least.

Why do people do it now? Are they just blindly carrying on a tradition from the past which is now pointless? It seems like everywhere you go to get lunch on Monday there’s a red beans and rice special. It gets kind of old sometimes.
Then don’t eat it. Problem solved.

RBnRice is a tradition in S La. because on Sundays after Church you usually had a nice meal -for bck then esp during the depression.- A ham.
To feed large families (7-9 kids) on Mondays one cajun woman put all the leftover ham and hock in a pot made a roux and threw in what was cheap-red beans. It caught on...
Some traditions never die.

It's crazy how cheap a lot of cajun food actually is.

No cajun woman would ever make a roux for red beans. Ham in red beans is also a New Orleans thing.

the roux is made by smooshin the beans to the side and I meant cajuns and NOLA people. I had family from in the country and in NOLA. I was speaking overall in general-- Don't know how bayou cajuns ate, probably the same you tell us...

Why do people in South Louisiana insist on eating this on Mondays? I
In the old days, Monday was laundry day so the woman of the house put on a pot of beans to slow cook all day while she did the laundry...
about the same reason my wife still leaves cooked food on the counter until it has cooled to room temp like her mom did. Only her mom's first fridge was an ice box with a real ice block in it. Some people are hard to change...

Mondays used to be laundry day and red beans took all day to cook, so it worked. It’s a tradition.

The only reason I’m posting is because I want you to know who gave you your 46th downvote

Nothing triggers me harder than when Northerners ask me why I’m eating a side dish as a meal. I love muthafrickin red beans and rice.

I had some last Thursday. Seriously.

Same reason places do fish on Friday. It's traditional and fricking delicious.
Also, restuarants love it because it's beans and rice and it's dirt cheap if they don't get crazy with the protein. They can sell a huge plate of it for $8 on Mondays because of the tradition, make the customers happy, and still make a killing on the stuff. If there's any left that has to be thrown out, again, it's dirt cheap.

Why did Louisiana land on red beans and not black beans?
I don't know, but were you aware kidney beans are poisonous?
Cook them beans

me too and I have only met one yankee that loved it.

Because we like it. Go live with the yankees if you don’t.

I know in the past this was a tradition because people felt like it was a good, hearty, protein-rich food to start the week off with.
Sounds like you know why. So that makes this thread pointless. Some people like traditional things and this is one that has stuck around. Kind of like people eating greens and black-eyed-peas on New Year's day.
ETA: It's also fricking delicious.

I'm sure that didn't happen more than once.
