You are allowed to record cops.
On the other hand, you cooperating with him is probably why you got a warning and not a ticket.

This smells like a narcotics highway interdiction traffic stop. You weren't who he was looking for, hence the warning.

The "turn off the recorder" thing is BS but everyone harping on the 4 MPH over thing are wrong as well. Over the speed limit is over the speed limit whether you like it or not. Hitting someone for 27 in a 25 on a neighborhood street is bull but on the interstate you know damn well how fast you are going. They raised the speeds to 75 because 65 was too slow in modern cars. If they don't enforce the limit then what is the point? I set my cruise and go. Doesn't excuse the other thing but don't act like the officer was doing something illegal in stopping him.

Just be happy you left the dog at home.

Did you request that he turn his off too?

That's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. I know you mean well of course, but he doesn't. When you're pulled over and instantly get out of the car he has no idea if you're about to pull a weapon, come confront him, etc.
The best thing you can do, IMO, when being pulled over is roll down your windows, turn off the car, and put your hands on the steering wheel where he can see. If it's night, turn on the dome lights. It may sound submissive or whatever, but from his perspective, he has, literally, NO idea who you are or what's going through your mind. When he's approaching the window, anything you can do to appear non-threatening is another point in your favor in hopefully just getting a warning.
The first time I ever got pulled over (it was for speeding), I was a teenager and it was at night and he asked me to get out of the car (it was a pretty cool car and I was going pretty fast). I was nervous as all hell so I put my hands in my pockets and he instantly told me to take them out. It seemed dumb at the time but I certainly understand the reason behind it.

actually, they haven't quite weighed in on the matter
however, it is assumed this would hold true

only low enough to allow you to hand him things. Then lock the doors.

agreed.
If he does ask you to get out of the car, roll up the windows all the way, and after existing the vehicle close and lock the door.

I'm still waiting to hear what all these e-bad asses would have done in your situation.

I understand I should have pressed the issue further but as I said earlier, given the situation it wasn't in my best interest.

why?

leaving the door open is the same as leaving your house door open, it implies ability to search.
The advice i gave is directly from the ACLU website.

who said anything about leaving it open? You said to roll the windows up and lock the doors.
What would be the difference in just shutting the door behind you normally?

open windows, or an unlocked door have been construed as implied consent for a search.
