Headed to Los Angeles for a wedding this weekend. Coming back on Wednesday. Seeking tips for things to do and see.

Something to not see.. Hollywood.. It's gross.. So dirty and with so many people it's really just not worth the time and effort. Unless you've never been and are dying to go.. Then prepare to be disappointed.

santa monica pier/3rd st promenade/venice are a must and are all within walking distance of each other. downtown LA is absolute dog shite and can be avoided.
LA is so big and spread out and there is so much stuff to do, the most important question is what are you interested in?

If time permits, I would add a drive along the shoreline in Rancho Palos Verdes. That's honestly my favorite area to get away from the noise, pollution, crime, and garbage.
For Japanese food, go to Little Osaka (Sawtelle Blvd.) between Santa Monica and Westwood.

Skip the tar pits. Venice/Santa Monica are great. Ignore the guy who said something about gangs. that's way off base.
Check out Hollywood, it's worth doing once. It has some magical phony energy that's unlike anywhere else in the world. If you have a car, cruise the Hancock Park area just outside Hollywood. The architecture is neat.
Definitely skip downtown....there's not much to see there.
I'm not a true LA maven, but these things were cool to me.

I was there a month ago. First of all, the pier just sucks. It's lame touristy crap packed with little kids and trashy people. It's like the Navy Pier in Chicago, but shadier. Venice beach is awesome, however. Secondly, I was being a little facetious with the gangbanging stuff but I saw many a neck and head tattoo on the local Dodgers fans. Feel free to explain the appeal of it to me, however.

If you staying at LAX the Sheraton Gateway is great. Breakfast Buffet is super. Be careful because there are two Sheratons and get the Bus for the Gateway. Last time I stayed there they were offering a Suite for $50 more a night and the Suite was the size of my first house.

I don't mind SM, but Manhattan Beach I liked. Also, the In N Out near LAX is really fun to watch all the aircraft coming in

Laguna Beach was very cool. Watched 4 dolphins play about 50 feet from the edge of the beach.

Monday: Go to the beach, but not SaMo or Venice. Go to Hermosa or even Torrance if you want some peace and quiet.
Tuesday: Have lunch at Canter's on Fairfax, then take a drive on Sunset from Hollywood to Malibu. Or maybe continue on PCH up to Ventura, it's a nice drive once you get out of SaMo.

If you are into hiking check out Malibu State Park or Runyon Canyon or Los Liones Trail (a must in my book). Pretty amazing view of LA and the Pacific Ocean...
A bike ride from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice is always a good time for people watching. Also be sure to stop at the skate park in Venice.
The Getty is an incredible museum in terms of collections and the building/grounds itself. I could spend a whole day there every trip we make.
Drive the PCH to Mailbu. Be careful when you leave as there is currently a lot of construction which amplifies traffic during peak times.
Warner Bro's and Universal Studios are fun for studio tours. Go to Universal if you are more into a theme park or got to Warner if you want to see more of the behind the scenes of the entertainment business.
Restaurants:

Sushi: Katsuya Brentwood or Nobu
Very Nice Asian Dinner: Mr. Chow
Casual/Lunch: Brentwood Market, Lamill Coffee, Taverna Tonys (Malibu), Brick and Mortar (Santa Monica), Blue Plate Oyesteria (SantaMonica)
The Bungalow @ the Fairmount in Santa Monica is a great place to have a drink. Don't get there any later than 8 or there will be a line out the door that will not move.

I would skip Hollywood as well. I enjoyed Tar pits, Venice, and the big fruit and veg market they have going on..cant remember name - also have meat markets there.
