Reality vs The Media (Including Social Media)

I don't know what's going in the news too much these days because I'm not watching tv. I just stream on my phone. I'm not on social media that much anymore other than a couple apps on my phone and FB isn't one that I frequent often. I have been living my best life here in Marietta and I have noticed a stark difference from what was being portrayed a few months ago about the "racial tension" that's brewing in this country. Two weeks ago, in Smyrna, two white guys were shot by cops in front of Kuroshio Sushi Bar, I watched as one died. The place was swarmed with pissed black people videoing their every move. I felt so sad to witness the guy die. I talked to a few cops and told them to be safe, one gave me a hug.
I often go to The Battery and all I see are interracial couples with people of all ethnicities. I have over heard some fun, interesting conversations while sitting at the bar, with just groups of people just enjoying life. I went to L on North last week and met the coolest 75 y/o guy. We talked a good bit and he bought me a drink. I went back last Friday and he gave me a big hug and said he was glad to see me and was glad to see him. The world is nowhere near as bad as it seems if you are just living, loving, and laughing.

I've went a week or so at a time with not turning on the tv at all and not looking at any social media and it's a blessing.
I agree about the race issue, especially down in the south outside of the big cities. I took a little trip last month and visited three little towns on the coast in Mississippi. I interacted with several black people and it was almost shocking how nice they were to me. Just walking down the street or walking near the beach and I would hear "have a nice day", "enjoy your walk", "how you doing honey".

You seem to find yourself in a lot of random hugging situations.

That’s because they were afraid you were going to shoot them. You know whites hunt black people all the time right?

The media is the enemy of this country. I don’t know why anyone trusts any of them. Fox, CNN, they are all propagating hate and division.

I hear you, man.
I worked one of the covid checkpoints at the hospital yesterday, people of all ages, race, ethnicity, etc., and had nothing but polite pleasant interactions with them all.

Realilty vs The Media
What you see in social media and on the news is likely less than 10% of the truth of what is going on.
Best to ignore that stuff if you want to stay in reality.

Maybe you can get Mariska Hargitay to play you in the Lifetime movie.

It really is crazy the stark contradiction of what's portrayed in the news and what's going on in everyday life.
A couple days ago I had to stop by Walmart on my way home and there was a line outside because they were holding people up to try and keep people distanced from each other. The guy in front of me was a black gentleman in his 50s or 60s. We were outside for maybe 5 mins and we were just laughing and joking about how ridiculous the procedure was. My son was with me and he gave him a peppermint from his pocket. You know, just people being people. And this all happened in AL and believe it or not, it isn't the first conversation I've had with a person who doesn't look like me. The news and whack jobs on social media would have you believe that I hate him and he's scared of me. It really is crazy.
I really think it has a lot to do with growing up in the south. There is a bigger black population per capita here and we all grew up together and have learned to live together. The south got most of its racial issues out of our system back in the 60s. Seriously one of the most segregated places I've ever been in my life was the Midwest. A guy I worked with from Wisconsin told me once that he had never had to interact with black people on a regular basis until he went to college and got a job in the south.

The media is the enemy of the country, whose mission is to help get us to a place where having rational conversations with those who we disagree does not happen. At that point, there is a complete divide and everything is “black or white”

This 1000%.
I've met more random friendly people in the last two months than I have in the last 3 years of work travel.
People are sick of all the negativity. Most just want to live and let live. And these folks are from all walks of life. Baws, doctors, decorators, retired folks.
None of them with the same friendly disposition agree at all with the hate being fomented out there. Put down the phone, look up, and enjoy life. You'll be glad you did.
