The MTV thread made me think about all the “shows” on tv now. Which one of the reality shows is the closest to being “real”? My 600lbs Life seems somewhat real, although it’s disgusting

I don’t know, but “Hoarders” and “Intervention” were both great at making you feel good about yourself.

Reality TV is an enigma. Some shows have huge followings. Yet, try googling any of them and see if you can find any publicly available information about these “real people” on the web that wasn’t written by Bravo or TLC’s PR team, or a regurgitation of those releases.

Forgot about Intervention. My brother in law was addicted to heroin so that show hit close to home

Was Real World the original reality show?

I foresee a future in which “reality” shows are all AI generated.
That would be about as “real.”

“Hoarders”
also acted to remind us that accumulations are bad and that all the storage sheds are a growth industry for a reason.

Used to love trashy reality shows when they were real people involved. Now it’s just all influencers.

They are all fake and scripted

Add teen mom to that list.
Also, I loved intervention but hoarders gives me anxiety. I can’t watch it.

I've just about stopped watching TV.
My wife is hung up on reality shows, whether it's Nekkid & Afraid or House Hunters on obscure islands.
No thanks.

The dating and buying ones are awful but all the housewives/do nothing ones are the worst.

Not Bear Grylls.
Alone seems pretty "real" but I also wouldn't be shocked if it was all bullshite.

It’s essentially wrestling, but for women.

The 2nd season of the Real World had Sean Duffy and Rachel something. They married each other. She’s on Fox and he’s transportation secretary

I always thought survivor and the like were hilarious. They wanted you to believe these people were alone in the wild, but there’s also a camera man and crew there that probably has an ice chest with drinks and snacks at their feet.

Even if these shows aren't scripted per se, the producers can control them with the questions they ask in the 1v1 interviews. Feed into folks natural paranoia and introduce story lines and create conflict. They were better when they didn't recruit and had free range nut jobs make the shows.

I was a PA on one called Treasure Hunters. They are mostly bullshite. What little bit of reality you get is actually deceptive editing. The wavy/shaky camera stuff is the most annoying part of it all, as if the production crew are all amateurs and shitty camera operators and everything is taking them off guard. Total mental screw job.
