If he doesn't change his mind, only 2 knew about it and 1 is dead. He could, in addition, load up on insurance with his wife as the lotto winner, then just stroll around Plank and Evangeline around midnight.

Nah, you did the right thing. Sure he’s embarrassed, but in the long run it will mean much more to him that you stood by him in his lowest point. I didn’t run off, but I had a year where I was just off my rocker, and while I was embarrassed about it, my friends stuck by me, I know that they’re truly there for me (and vice versa), and now I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Trust me, he won’t and really doesn’t resent you for this. He simply resents himself, and y’all going out of your way to help him will mean the world to him eventually.
