Damn. There’s going to be 100+ people dead from this. Building collapses when most people are sleeping.

Not sure about the construction technique but rebar corrosion is the first thing I thought of.

Possible, however there would be some warning signs before just letting loose.

Ok, so just how does a 40 year old 12 story building collapse?

No idea if it applies in this situation or not, but underground erosion could do it. Also, Florida is full of sink holes just waiting to open up and swallow a building.

Victor Cohen, who lives nearby, told television station WPLG the building had been undergoing a major renovation when the ocean front wing “collapsed like a pancake.”

because it's built on what is basically quick sand.

Don't build your house on the sandy land. Don't build it too near the shore.

There are thousands of buildings built on that ground that don’t collapse.

Sand does settle quickly initially, but is more structurally sound in the long run.
Clay like we have in louisiana is what you don't really want to build on. Has a much higher plasticity than sand.

Idk if this is a foundation issue. They might have not been using the right reinforcing steel for areas near saltwater (epoxy coated)? Or designed the wrong rebar spacing. Or perhaps didn't account for enough wind load in the design, being that close to the water. Will be interesting to know the cause.

What a nightmare to be lying in bed and suddenly falling to your death.

Mayor of town was just on Today show. He said first responders were rushing in without regard for their own safety “just like the trade center thing.”

“Just like the trade center thing”?

How can people in power be so continuously tone deaf and stupid.

When I was a kid I used to think adults were so smart.
