I am sure my google search just put me on a list, but reading through some of that thread makes me wonder what the best plan and route would be to get out of country and never be found again.

connections with foreign people/captains of a ship are invaluable in a situation like that

Immediately shave head bald and get some fake tattoos.

Probably try to sneak on a ship somehow

I’d try to swim to Cuba before I get taken to prison.

Leave the US by driving into Mexico in the 2 week interim period. Take out all of the money in my bank account in structured amounts. Or wire the money to a contact abroad if such a person exists (this is assuming really large amounts of cash). Board a flight from Mexico to a non extradition treaty country. Buy the ticket in cash.
Macedonia seems like a doable one although it is risky because it may waive that non extradition at some point.

Try to live off of savings and/or teaching English lessons to locals, maybe even try advising for standardized tests. In a low cost of living country, this could be feasible. That's why I didn't pick the UAE or Switzerland.

Move to Australia since it's rural enough and I speak their common language

Hide in plain sight or get a New Iberia haircut and blend in with the natives.

Realistically, I’d probably put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger. I don’t have the access to quick cash to make some elaborate escape and live the rest of my life. I also don't have the cash it would take to mount a halfway decent defense and my family isn’t going to help me at this point. Yeah, I’d put a gun in my mouth.

Baw, if you've got a gun, you've got access to quick cash. Murder is actually worse than bank robbery.

Why do hypothetical American fugitives fantasize about escaping through Mexico?

Seems obvious to me. Airport security could be more intense than border security, especially border security going the other way.

Once you cross the border you can then fly out to wherever you want.

Just go to trial. No jury is going to convict you for trying to defend yourself from getting AIDS.

If we are talking a real crime then probably Cuba. They don't give two shits about America. Just ask Assata Shakur. Killed a cop and has been hanging out there sipping mojitos for the last 30 years. Second choice is Alaska but I really don't know if I'd survive the cold. Would have to have a pretty solid second identity.

What country are you flying to in this scenario and how do you live the rest of your life? Assuming modest means and no criminal or out of country network to rely on.

Some nice "shithole" countries in that list. Guess it all comes down to resources and skills. I'd probably go Indonesia or the Marshall Islands in that case. Even if life is shite at least the views are nice.

My choice would be Vietnam. Healthy US expat community and plenty of opportunities to actually make decent money.

If I had serious money it would be the UAE.

ETA Two things you have to be very mindful of, one is the ability to have permanent residence. You will be really screwed if they kick you out after X amount of time and the US has revoked your passport! The second is your ability to work in the country unless you have and are able to get enough money out of the US to live for the rest of your life. Many of the countries on the list are difficult or expensive to get permanent residence in and may not allow you to work at all even with residence.

Afghanistan: frick no
Algeria: No
Andorra: Could work but it is one of the world's smallest countries
Angola: No
Armenia: No
Bahrain: Possibility
Bangladesh: No
Belarus: No
Bosnia: Possibility
Brunei: No
Burkina Faso: No
Burma: frick no
Burundi: No
Cambodia: No
Cameroon: No
Cape Verde: No
Central African Republic: No
Chad: No
China: Impossible because they require significant paperwork weeks in advance, including flight details, passport information, etc. Could work if all that was secured.
Comoros: No
Congo: No
Democratic Republic of Congo: No
Djibouti: No
Equatorial Guinea: No
Eritrea: No
Ethiopia: Likely no
Gabon: No
Guinea: No
Guinea-Bissau: No
Indonesia: Possibility
Ivory COast: My friend is a journalist there, so maybe. Otherwise, no.
Kazakhstan: Possibility but definitely not a top choice
Kosovo: Sure but tiny country
Kuwait: Possibility
Laos: No
Lebanon: Possibility
Libya: frick no
Macedonia: Sure
Madagascar: No
Malidves: Sure but it is probably very expensive
Mali: No
Marshall Islands: No
Micronesia: No
Moldova: Sure
Mongolia: If I had to
Montenegro: Sure
Morocco: If I had to
Mozambique: No
Namibia: No
Nepal: No
Niger: No
Oman: Possibility
Qatar: Possibility
Russia: Possibility
Rwanda: Only as a last resort
Samoa: I don't know, maybe
Sao Tome: No
Saudi Arabia: Only as a last resort but this is a risky country because of the way they treat criminals and the security vetting to get in.
Senegal: No
Serbia: Possibility
Sudan: frick No
Syria: frick no
Togo: No
Tunisia: Apparently this place is semi decent.
Uganda: No
Ukraine: If I had to
UAE: Would be awesome, but it is pricey and no one needs to be taught English there.
Uzbekistan: If I had to
Vanuatu: I doubt Mexico has any flights there but sure, why not?
Vatican: I don't know how this works for non clergy. Tiny country but great standard of living, I'm sure. But job situation would be tough
Vietnam: If I had to
Yemen: frick no

So the possible countries

1) Bahrain
2) Bosnia
3) Indonesia
4) Kazakhstan
5) Kosovo
6) Kuwait
7) Lebanon
8) Macedonia
9) MOldova
10) Montenegro
11) Morocco
12) Russia
13) Oman
14) Qatar
15) Serbia
16) Tunisia
17) Ukraine
18) Uzbekistan
19) Vietnam
20) UAE

The top of my list would be Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia, and probably Russia. Not super ideal, but livable for all. The first three would be really cheap from a cost of living standpoint, being fluent in English would be a hghly valued skill, and I think you could make a living fairly easily. Lebanon, Vietnam, Morocco, Bahrain and others would be feasible as well.

UAE would be very pricy but definitely the nicest of all the countries from an amenity standpoint. Could be hard finding work.

The next thing to do would be to see the visa requirements for each country. Obviously the ones that require a complex Visa like China are out of contention. You can only go to ones that have full reciprocity with the US or have easy to pay entrance fees (like 30 bucks at customs for an immediate visa).
