I disagree to an extent. This is one reason why the divorce rate is so high IMO. Kids will grow up and move on, but your spouse should be there for a lifetime.

Also, you shouldn't let kids come between you and your spouse. Then you have the tail wagging the dog.

I never said I let my kids come before my spouse in everyday life, you have to find a balance there.

Maybe I interpreted the question wrong but I viewed it as: if you have to be cut off completely from family rank the order. Anyone who says they'd save their spouse from drowning before their kids is high.

-Spouse and children are the same to me.
-parents
-sister
-nephew
-grandparents

who would i die for:
children - no explanation needed
nephew - i'm older, he has his whole life to live, and my wife is still there for my kids
spouse - it's my job to protect her
sister - i'm older, she's not married, i would always protect her

would not die for my parents or anyone else, i love my parents and grandparents, and even my wife's grandparents, but they have lived long enough, and i'm pretty sure they would feel the same way.
