Are leg extension machines bad for your knees?

I'm thinking of buying a used medical one on the cheap from my buddy's physical therapy office.

Max weight is 300lbs.

A little fotness nut at work says they are bad for your knees.

Important for your knees to be aligned with the axis of rotation.

You're probably joking, but I did three sets of 10 with 300 yesterday and my quads are like jelly.

These are just for accessory work. Doing super heavy weight on these machines isn't really a good idea...use it for an accessory after your main lifts with moderate weight and slow grinding reps...work the muscle not the weight when it comes to accessory lifts. And always remember #gainz

I think they're bad - it is an open chain, isolation exercise that puts a good bit of shearing force on the knee itself, as well as uses the knee as the leverage point, fulcrum, which is completely unnatural.

I believe that closed chain, compound movements that are more consistent with real physical activity, such as lunges, squats, and leg presses are better uses of your leg workout time and energy.

I don't think they're as bad as some folks think, but am certainly wary enough to avoid them in the future. They certainly don't fit my philosophy of exercise.

You either don't know what a leg extension is, or the machine has more pulleys than an Asian massage parlor

All of this. In the properly performed squat, the knees are basically neutral. Though squats alone won't get you those bodybuilder thunder thighs you're looking for.

I'm 350lbs and can still squat more than my body weight.

Just cause I got old and fat doesn't mean I got weak

Yes, working out in general is bad for your joints. You should try a different fitness approach like yoga or swimming

Ace and ryno answered your question. But imp they are a waste of space. But if space is not a concern leg extensions are ok as an aux exercise
