If he didn't match the offer you certainly made the RIGHT decision!

Good Luck!

I told him I wouldn't have gotten this offer without everything he taught me and he said that's what he wants to hear as a boss.

Several years ago when I was a manager for large company and I had 2 admin/timekeepers that worked for me. The one had that had been their the longest was and still is to this day a very good friend outside of work.
I could tell that morning something was off with her and after about 20-30min at work I asked if she was okay. She had tears in her eyes and her hands were shaking as she told me that she accepted another job. She was a newly single mom and took a job for more money. I had already fought for a raise for her and gave all my boss would allow me, so she knew she was tapped out. New job was about a 24% increase in salary and sticks pretty good to just 40hrs whereas she had to work OT for us but even with the extra hours her annual pay was still less the new one, plus the time saved.
She was afraid to leave me somewhat in a bad spot, plus she enjoyed me as a boss so she felt bad for leaving. I told her if she did not take that job I would fire her arse on the spot from this one so she would have to take it. She's still there!

How do you recommend me moving on up from help desk/desktop support. I am willing to take nearly all other jobs in IT. I am N+ and S+ certified.

I dont live in PA.

As a boss, it sucks to lose someone that is good. As the boss, I selfishly want them to stay because they help push the business forward. However, as a mentor I would never want to hold someone back from growing. I look on the positive side and use the change as an opportunity. Hopefully your mentor has a similar mindset. If not, it should not matter because change is healthy and that’s a two way street. Good luck and use this chance as a stepping stone to bigger things.

Two principles;

- Respect your current situation.

- Value yourself.

Been a great place to work. Time to move on.

I'll tell you like my first boss told me when I was worried about leaving him:

"Have a good life. See ya."

I was broke up two whole days before trying to figure out how I was going to tell him.

Dude did not care one iota.
