Sorry if this isn’t the right board for this, but none seemed animal specific.

I just got a house and I had been looking to get a dog soon, (old apartment didn’t allow pets and haven’t had a dog since I was a kid) and a friend of mine found a stray dog with no tags, no microchip but seems to be house trained.

I’m considering adopting her but I don’t know about any laws that Louisiana has about a holding period before you can just take in a stray dog or requirements for effort to find an owner.

She seemed very skittish at first but by now (second day) seems to have been house trained at some point and has been very tame, no chewing anything, gets along well with my friends dogs, no accidents, etc.

However with no tags or chip we’re not sure what to do besides social media and flyers in the neighborhood to find any owner she may have had.

No idea if she’s spayed or is up to date on her shots. Any advice on best vets in BR to take her to get checked out at and any other tips about adoption process would be welcome.

I'd be posting on your local animal lost and found pages, checking with the shelters and maybe a few vet offices. If it seems obviously trained, someone is likely looking for their pet, Always is the off chance the dog was dumped, but I'd make a good faith effort to try to find the owner.

I mean she seems like a good dog, and I want to give her a home if I can. My buddy can’t keep her for more than a few days. There’s fliers going out and social media posts from several of our friends, but he lives out off Buddy Ellis in a relatively new subdivision and doesn’t know a lot of the neighbors.

She’s a lab mix that seems to be a few months old.

If nothing else I’ll keep holding on to her after he can’t and if no one claims her I’ll take her in.

Much better to buy from a breeder....have a better chance of knowing what you're getting.

I don’t think there are laws about that. Someone dumped a dog in our neighborhood in Baton Rouge years ago. The dog just stayed in the same front yard where she was dumped for weeks. She saw me feeding cats and was clearly hungry. I put some dog food in a bowl on the sidewalk and she came across the street to eat. After that, we were best friends. She lived in our driveway for about 2 weeks then was invited inside the house when two kids were walking an unleashed Pitt bull. We had her for 4 years. Sweetest dog ever, LilyMay.

This.

I've got 4 kids. My wife only gave birth to 1. We found the rest at the mall.

As long as you have looked or the owner in good faith, i think you should just keep the dog and continue to care for her and adopt her.

Doubtful her owners will show up but FB can be great for that. So just do that and assume the pups is now legally yours unless an owner steps forward (usually unlikely)

My dog just showed up one day and never went away. That was ten years ago. I think you're okay.

You could just give the dog back if it turned out to be someone else's dog, I seriously doubt they would get the law involved unless you refused to give it back

A lot of dogs run away on 4th of July due to the fireworks so it could be someones dog that's been living on the streets for the past week. I don't know if you can do much more than you're doing but you may want to post it on Nextdoor.

Not even kidding when i tell you that i have a friend that posts every time, every day when her kid poops. Her kid is now 21, lol.

It sounds obnoxious and disgusting and TMI but the daughter is severely disabled with a genetic condition and if she doesn't poop everyday then she ends up in the hospital with bad complications and could die. Her life is a painful struggle at times as she is nonverbal. No pooping means danger and pain and an ER trip.

So if she is pooping ok then she is happy and healthy and we all cheer. A bunch of us on FB cheering on a lil kid to poop. Ridiculous but true, only on fb, lol. If it helps her parents laugh then we are all in.

Just post on facebook where you found the dog. I'm pretty sure there's a local lost dog website as well, or that might be on facebook. I don't know how facebook works.

We lost our two about 6 years ago and was looking all over the internet to see if anyone found them. They eventually found their way back home. Bunch of dumbasses. Both were severly dehydrated. Probalby ran around in the woods for a good 5 days. They both looked terrible. since that day, neither of them leave my side if we are away from the house.

Anyways, if the owner of that dog wants to find them, they'll be looking on the internet. If no one is claiming her after a week of posting on facebook adn what not, then the owner either doesn't care that they lost them or lost them on purpose.

I have 6 dogs. I paid for one. Yes, you should make a good faith effort to find the owner, but a(good) owner should be looking for the dog. So I'd say the dog was dumped or simply neglected.
I've only had an issue with one of the dozen or so dogs I've fostered/adopted over the years.
I'm fairly sure there are no laws governing this, so keep the dog if you can.
