My son is considering switching from Catholic Highschool Baton Rouge to Parkview Baptist or U High lab school next year (in August at the start of new school year). He is currently a sophomore at Catholic High and on the football team. He heard that if he switched schools he won’t be allowed to play football for a year. Is that true? I could understand switching midyear or if he was a star player being recruited, but that’s not the case.

I looked up the rule on Lhssa, and it seems he is correct. but the they use the term home attendance zone. I can’t figure out if U high and parkview are in the same home attendance zone as Catholic. Seems like parkview wouldn’t be since they’re not near each other?

I am not sure how to find the home attendance zone, but if you live in the home attendance zone, immediately eligible.

ETA: This may help with attendance zones. However, to be safe, I would check with the school and the LHSAA. LINK

Ok. Good. Thanks. We would likely be in parkview’s home attendance zone.

It would have to be a bonifide move for him to even be considered eligible. Even then, he can still be ruled ineligible, and have to sit out a year. Just curious, why do y’all want to leave Catholic? I could possibly understand U-High, but definitely not Parkview.

PBS and Catholic are private schools though. How would they determine the home attendance zone? We have a number of kids that attend both schools in our neighborhood.

I know you can go from private to public without penalty because they can’t force you to keep paying for the private school. Not sure about private to private.

That’s another aspect that further complicates things. I did find a map but Catholic and parkview aren’t on it and there’s no key/legend to the map so it’s pretty useless

In a nutshell:
He loves the sport and wants to play more. There’s so much talent at CHS right now

And he thinks the all boys thing is weird.

And my husband and I are open to his possibly wanting to switch because of the tuition savings. (We have 5 kids in Catholic school.)

But this was all his idea. We were totally caught off guard 2 weeks ago when he told us he was interested in switching.

We are zoned for Tara. If you've ever looked at the map it's ridiculous. It goes from Gus Young to the U Club

I think he would need to sit out. Private schools are treated just like public as far as transfer rules. Unless you moved to an address in the new school district you’re ineligible for a year.

Obviously confirm this but that’s how I understand it.

I'm not sure why there are people down voting this. It has to be proven that you are moving schools for a non-athletic reason. Even if it's a legit transfer, if the LHSAA feels like it was an athletic move, they can rule him ineligible. Hell, they ruled two girls that sat out a full year, with a legit move, ineligible at Walker. Granted it got overturned, but it took almost 6 weeks for that to happen. That's over half of a football season. The LHSAA enforces it, and a lot of their reasoning for enforcing rules, is based on the opinions of the person running the investigation. I will say that Coach Fertitta and Catholic would probably not even fight it though. If you don't want to be there and play for them, they would want you to go somewhere you are happy.

You have . . . five children . . . all in private schools? If you and your husband can keep up with all that, AND have the energy and time to put one of them in a football program with all the chasing-around that is going to require, you ought to be able to send your kid to any school you want to. You guys are my heroes.

The younger kids don’t do extra curriculars like the older kids did when they were young. We didn’t put our 7 year old in baseball, and i feel guilty about it. but i can’t chase a toddler around ballparks, bleachers, and dance studios multiple times a week anymore. I’ve done that for 16 years. So we decided The younger ones are gonna play sports when the school teams start - 4th grade - rather than from birth ;)

Your kid can’t fit in at Catholic, so you want to send him to Uhigh? FYI, it’s not any different except that they have girls there. But if your son had any game he’d be able to meet girls without going to school with them. Also Uhigh has even better depth on their football team, your son won’t play there if he can’t play at Catholic

He could have a better chance of both at Parkview, but Parkview is a shitty school
