My Dad (Korea vet, Army) said the "blanket party" was definitely a thing.

Went to Parris Island in May 91. My “heavy”, or junior green-belt DI was mean as hell…never off, always seemed madder than a bathed cat. Two years later I went to OCS and that Marine was my Senior DI. Different role entirely. My experience was similar to TexanTiger…tough, but a truly indelible, positive experience. I’m still in but haven’t been back to PI since. PCS’ing back there this summer. Can’t freakin wait. Geaux Tigers and Semper Fi.

Was there a “Private Pyle” in your unit? Was your drill sergeant anything close to Gunnery Sgt. Hartman? And “blanket parties”… how often did that actually happen?

Boot camp at MCRD San Diego...August 22 - November 9th of ‘88.

Yes, yes and only once while I was a squad leader. Dipshit who I went to HS with who couldn’t get his schitt together....strongly encouraged by one of my Drill Instructors.

Hah ... I never heard this one but it makes a lot of sense. 3rd Bn seemed to have the trouble children. 2nd Bn (I was there in F Co.) seemed to be for reasonable folks (core logistics and grunts) and 1st Bn was for the "cerebrals" Nonetheless, I kid somewhat as we're all Marines. Semper Fi, gents.

I've heard interviews where R. Lee Ermy said in real life DIs were not as hard was the way he played Gunny Hartman.

I know nothing personally, I went through AF basic in 86, it was like cub scout camp, expect not as hard.

My cousin had a dude in his boot camp that was a late in life oops baby. His father and two older brothers that were 15 years older or so served and thought that the Marines had gone soft.

The brothers and father would write notes on the outside of the envelope like “ Don’t worry my DI was a dickhead too” and “ Good to hear you are having such an easy time”.

DIs of course knew what was up but they would punish the poor bastard during mail call.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to speak in multiple syllables and 5+ letter words. Please tell me you’re at least a jarhead and not any of the others.

I never heard of any of that shite until the last 10 years or so on social media. I've been out since '93.

Baw, I know you meant well, but you can’t come into a thread about Marine Corps boot camp talking about your basic training experience in the Coast Guard

Only comparison between the two is the Pyles. They are universal. No question the boot camps aren’t comparable, but the idiots were.

My father's Marine DI was there to break their spirit, as told by my Dad. Those young boys' spirits were broken and were replaced by Men, the Marines. My father fought on Okinawa (1st div) in WWII at age 19! Things, boot camp, I mean, has drastically changed ....most pussies couldn't take it. Therefore DIs have changed tactics dramatically.

Pvt Pyle was a special case, probably intended to represent the draftees who in other times would have been rejected as unsuitable for military service.

Stupid question that I should know the answer to, but did the USMC take draftees in the Vietnam era? I always assumed all the draftees went to the Army/Navy.

Edit: never mind, google answered my question. Answer is yes, the Marines did take draftees. Never would have guessed.

I spent two years in the army reserves before joining the Corps. Boot camp was fun. Much different than army basic. SOI was more fun, and the fleet was heaven. ‘92-‘03

The movie has some merit. It captures the gist of it. My dad was with 1/5 and fought at Hue. He says there were similarities.

Just for historical perspective, my father went through Army Basic Training in the early sixties, just before Vietnam started revving up to full speed. His Drill SGT was a WWII/Korea Lieutenant Colonel who had been RIF'd back down to NCO and was just putting in his time to retirement, when he would retire at his former LTC rank. He gave zero fricks. It wasn't always harder back in the day.

I thought you didn’t have to be? I know a guy from South America who joined up to help him get citizenship. Nicest guy.

In 1994 I arrived in PI on the same day the DI said "eye balls" at the swimming pool and blew his brains out in front of a bunch of recruits.

1st and 2nd Battalion was near the brass so DIs had to watch their six always but 3rd Battalion out in the sticks seemed to have a lot of rumors of shenanigans.

Seen a recruit scratch his nose for sand fleas in formation and the DI made him keep scratching until he bled.

Seen a recruit get thrashed daily at the rifle range. DI made him takes his boots off and bury them in the sand. Spent more time in the sand pit than actual snapping in. Rifle qual day came and the guy shot well below passing score and he gets up, hits our shooting instructor with the rifle, then points the weapon at our DI and the company commander. Series Gunny walks up to him and rips the rifle right out his hands. A few Marines tackle him and he was arrested. Pretty sure I left PI before that recruit did.
