This is nothing new ... just a 'new label.'
This began in the late 60's, after public school integration. I attended & graduated from public high school in 1965, and received a very, very good education. Expectations were high and most all students worked hard to learn and earn good grades.

However, in the ensuing years, it became evident that the "new" students were not coming up to the high standards. Consequently, the standards have become lower and lower, as opposed to demanding the "new" students rise to the high level of expectations

Then, of course, followed "the participation trophies," not the "winners trophies."

Could expound, but, will stop here - been observing this slow decline gain steam for decades .... AND, then "Along Came Joe!" And, here we are - very, very sad!!!!

The golden gates of Heaven!

In the end - God wins!

We are literally in the "mix" of the "battle" between good and evil.

That is my personal and honest belief.
