So you are saying the answer is
c) slow down in the higher gear, then down shift when the lower speed is reached?

I downshift all the time and just replaced both master and slave cylinders on my clutch. Maybe that contributed to it failing.....or it's because I have 322,0000 miles on it.

He didn't expressly say that anywhere in the OP.

downshift and then slow down in gear
He didn't?

Where in that can you say with certainty that he isn't using the brakes also?

Reduce engine speed while in the range for the gear then move to the lower gear?! Yes.

He's asking how to downshift on the internet. Excuse me for assuming he was asking coast or engine brake.

Technically he's asking how to slow down.
ETA: You're not going to slow down much just coasting out of gear, so that's basically the worst advice possible under most conditions. And for the 3rd time, I'm not saying he needs to drop from 5th to 2nd.

I slow down like the Shuttle did on re-entry.
I make broad, long Esses to expose a side profile of the vehicle and peel off speed.
I make my passenger(s) stick their arms out the window(s) too.
The right answer is coast to a stop, don't use your clutch, etc.

Yea, without the brakes I agree. The way the OP was worded it seemed the question was a.) use gears to slow down or b.) use brakes to slow down.

It wasn't just for you. Based off the way people are downvoting my post here, they are either misinterpreting or are all shitty drivers.

I drive a manual everyday, I:
- brake
- throw gear into neutral
- pump gas pedal so the revs catch up
- downshift
I rev match. I don't know how to downshift any other way.

Sorry for not being more specific. I thought Rev matching when shifting was assumed.
My question was really about braking/slowing out of gear vs engine braking.
ETA.. i never knew the term engine braking, only the concept.

Due to my handle, I'm more qualified than anyone here to answer this.
1) Downshifting is no harder on the clutch than upshifting if you do it correctly. Keep the relative speed of the clutch to the flywheel at zero and you aren't hurting anything.
2) downshifting is hard on syncronizers. How hard it is depends on how hard you downshift. Don't skip gears. If you want to downshift from 6th to 4th, go 6-5-4 even if you don't let out of the clutch in 5th. It helps keep the shaft speeds close so you aren't banging stuff. If you do go direct 6-4, let out the clutch while in neutral to get the transmission guts all sync'd up.
Moral of the story-if it all feels extremely smooth, it isn't hurting anything. If you're having to force shite and it isn't rev-matched when you let out than you're obviously accelerating wear. This isn't rocket science by any stretch.

If you rev match it's really no more harmless than an upshift I'd suppose.

I use the pedal in the middle to slow down.

I raced shifter karts for years so I translated that experience into on the road driving. I know people who drive manual but don't rev match. Seems so foreign to me.

Ahh, well I don't engine brake often. Very seldom. Seems rough. Smooth is fast after all.

Coasting is a moving violation in some states. In a big rig it is for sure. Brake in the higher gear until road speed and rpms are right for the lower gear then downshift. It's a good thing ya'll got synchronized transmissions.
