Brake pads are much cheaper than transmissions, remember that.
So doing this:
is not preferred.
Obviously a track situation is different as in coming out of corner, etc.
On a street car, think about being as smooth as possible on all components.

I prefer to pull the emergency brake.

Engine braking will destroy a clutch as well as put several other components at risk. Please put your drivetrain under unnecessary strain.
But hey, maybe I'm wrong, it has been 7 years since I got my A3, so it's no longer valid.

I'm not talking about engine braking from 6000 rpm and not using the brakes at all. But if I'm going from 70 to 35, I'm dropping a gear or two. My car also has 6 speeds.

I don't see a need for high revs while not accelerating.

Your mother.
Seriously, I already said no one taught me. I've driven a standard since I was 18, and have always done this. Never had a good reason one way or the other. That's why I asked here... To see experts argue it out.
And my car also has 6 speeds. And I often have to go from 70 mph down to 40 mph when the road changes designation (interstate changes to 2 Lane road).

How does it destroy the clutch if you rev match? Seems like the clutch is out the equation at that point...if done correctly.

The thing people don't realize about the Gear Wars is that it was never really about the gears at all.

You wanna slow down faster in fourth, or coast and slow down slower? I always matched RPMs and downshifted
Posted on 3/2/16 at 2:01 pm to Spirit of Dunson
Coasting down the road out of gear is unsafe. No reason to do it. I get the feeling I'm getting all these downvotes because people think I'm advocating to never use the brakes, but that's not what I'm saying at all.

No it won't. In normal driving situations, it has zero effect on the clutch. It has zero effect on the engine.

I buy that, even though I don't fully understand it.

it's not necessarily the pressure of the clutch disc pushing against the flywheel that prevents slippage. Its a combination of that and the friction material in the disc. That friction will eventually fade as it's used

You're advocating for coasting around out of gear, not sure you have much room to laugh at anyone.

Under normal driving, the torque on the clutch from engine braking is minimal. I think there would be little additional clutch wear from this.

Well you are talking about lowering RPM in gear then shifting down. The OP was talking about engine braking. Going into a lower gear to slow down, these are different.

He didn't expressly say that anywhere in the OP.
