Yup, bought a lot of their product from former officials of eastern bloc countries sold to all sides down in the former Yogoslavia, that conflict ended a lot of the guns moved east to Afghanistan afterwards.

Weird they never get their hands on any jets or helis huh? I feel like ISIS or some groups in Syria have over run some air fields.

Lack of crews aside. They don't have the supply chain to use Syrian jets or helicopters. AKs and trucks are a lot easier to find, maintain and use than jet or helocopter parts.

Plus if they did manage to take off between the US, and Russians they wouldn't last long up there.

Watch the movie War Dogs with Jonah Hill. He pretty much explains how weapons make it into the warzones of the world

that does beg the question why, if GM can turn off the engine on a stolen car, we can't turn off the engine on a stolen APC?

Because anyone willing to steal an APC can find someone to override the cutoff. Competent small engine mechanics aren't at all hard to find in such places.

They actually did get their hands on some jets when they over-ran al Tabqa, but modern fighter jets take a logistics train and national industrial capacity that was way beyond them even at their height.

NRA, ask the left.

This thread reminds me of the story of the guy who sold his work truck which was then auctioned and resold and then it ended up being pictured in use by a terrorist organization, with his company name still on the door.

Organizations like Daesh can't use aircraft beyond drones because of the immense logistical strain and the lack of proper facilities. Also, no one would let their aircraft be taken. They would be destroyed well before anyone could capture them.

They did and still do operate tanks though and that's impressive in its own right. Daesh has tank workshops where they can take a burnt out T-55 and get it running again and equip it with coverings to lessen its thermal profile.

ETA: Here's a link with some pictures showing the extent of ISIS' tank workshops.

I'm not sure they understand the capabilities of our military technology lol Does this guy really think he can't be seen?

They're not really worried about American tank capabilities. They are (rightfully, I will add) more concerned about how they match up with native Iraqi and Syrian capabilities. They're concerned with how they operate against late Soviet models, not with how they match up with the 1st Armored Division. They know that no American president - be it Obama or Trump or Bush or whoever - will send in tens of thousands of soldiers to that shithole to root their armor and infantry out, and they know that we can detect 1980's era Soviet technology from the air just as well as we can detect 2017 Russian technology. They are not stupid fighters.

We gave the Iraqi military equipment towards the end of combat operations while training them.

They of course bellied up and let ISIS take the shite over and did nothing about it. Except the Kurds

Yes we provided with to the mujahideen (my spelling may be off) to topple the Russians while their internal government was collapsing.

Of course shortly after the taliban came into power

NOLA could use a few of those to help clean it up.

Are some of those weapons provided by other countries through a 2nd hand source?

Yep, pretty much. Every country does it too.
