That's a pretty assinine generalization. I've never met a homeowner in the NE who doesn't have central air. Maybe in condos/apts in major cities but thats just silly. It's regularly in the 80s and 90s in the summers

Our family place in Kennebunk doesn't have central heat & air. Not even a window AC. It gets a bit warm in the middle of the summer, but we sit on the porch in the shade and drink Smashed Blueberry Porter and all is good. By bedtime you are pulling the cover up under your chin.

Uncommon here. Temps are generally in the 50s and 60s. Maybe a dozen days over 70 and 2-3 over 80 a summer. Most hotels don't have AC

Anyways, is the weather over in that area just that pleasant most of the year that the few times they have really hot weather isn't enough to justify central air? Are there other areas of the country where it's just not commonplace?

Yeah, pretty much. In places like San Francisco it doesn't get very hot usually, and if it does, it cools off really fast at night. I've stayed in hotels in San Francisco without air conditioning. You just open the window at night and it's fine.

Now in the Central Valley of California where I live, air conditioning is an absolute must.

Except for when people start throwing poop through it.

Olympia, WA here. House built in 1927 but retrofitted with A/C in the 1990's. Thank God, it's very nice to have.

The majority of my friends and co-workers don't have A/C.

Yes. The average temp here is 78 at it's hottest point...down to near 60 every night...so no, I don't need AC.

Up until I was about 7 or 8, I'm 40 now, my grand maw and grand paw didn't have any AC in there house. Then they got a big window unit and kept that going till 2005 when Rita flooded them out they raised their house and add central AC, this is Chauvin. We would sleep with the windows open and run the attic fan, I don't remember it being very hot, but I was a kid at the time.

And the majority of them had central AC? I doubt it.

In Seattle I had no central air and it was miserable anytime the temp was above 85 or so. No amount of fans in the world helped. Basically had to sleep in my own sweat. My mom visited me during a bad heat wave and it just sapped the life out of us.

They still do have "alerts" but smog isn't an issue for most angelenos. The last stage 3 smog alert in the city of LA was over 40 years ago. The last stage 2 alert was over 30 years ago. The last stage 1 alert was over 20 years ago. They had to change the scale so that there would still even be alerts. For reference the city of LA typically had the equivalent of 100-200 stage 1 alerts annually in the 50's and 60's.

I moved here in the 90's and it's like night and day. And it was already considerably better.

The overwhelming majority of California less than 10 miles from the coast is A/C free. That's probably close to half the state population.

I hope you are enjoying it! It is easily one of the best places to live as long as you live by the beach and I am assuming you are in Torrence or Rancho so you probably do.
