Does the BBB hold as much weight as it used to or was perceived to?

I can remember growing up that a negative mark with the BBB for said business was a red flag, but today I hardly hear of anyone speaking about it.

I suspect that with Google Reviews, Yelp and others, BBB has become insignificant today and will become even less impactful as the years go on.

Thoughts?

No, it is a sham now. I probably view places rated well by the BBB worse now because I know more than likely they just paid for their rating.

Yelp and online reviews have definitely started outweighing the BBB. The BBB is unclear for many consumers, whereas Yelp is simple and easy to use

So what happened? Did they change their business philosophy?

Is it a pay to play type of system today?

They came to my rescue recently when I filed a complaint against Oakley. I had sent my glasses in for repair and those frickers tried to steal them.

You see that thread "Millennials don't know tv is free."? They probably also think BBB stands for Bed Bath and Beyond. That doesn't mean it's useless though. You can link to your web site in your profile and that can help a tiny amount on Google.

They got Cox to cut me a check for overbilling asap...this was about 7 years ago...but after fighting with them for 2 weeks, the day after I filed complaint online, they called me to come pick up my check. It was hand-written.

You pay to be a certified member ("BBB Accredited") and can put the logo on your letterhead or sticker on your business door. Paying has nothing to do with the ratings and even members can have tons of complaints.

It's a joke unless your business caters to the elderly. They essentially operate like a mafia organization. Pay them and they'll protect you from bad ratings. The issue is if you don't pay them they don't even bother to ensure if the complaint is justified and if you do pay them the complaints go away no matter what.

These people have become a pay-for-play organization. They don't like being told "no" when they solicit memberships. I have no use for them.

Not since it became so much easier for people to read and post reviews of businesses on Yelp, Google, and Facebook

I, for one, absolutely use BBB rating as a tool. Relying solely on random individual accounts such as Facebook/Yelp as some have mentioned seems very naive. Chamber of Commerce is another resource I use. Are they archaic in the scope of the laziness of believing the first googled complaint you read? I guess they are.

The BBB is scam all they care about is the $400 a year business owners are paying. I opened a business profile with them (which is free) & I asked BBB about becoming a accredited business. They told me it takes a few years & be in good standing to become accredited business. Three days goes by they call me back & tell me if I pay $400 that same day they can expedite the accreditation. Also the last time I checked they only report on the negative reviews.
