I have never looked into this... are you shitting me that a spouse gets $255? LOL. So a person can pay into this for a lifetime, die, and their family gets $255?

I thought SS benefits could only go to a spouse, not kids. This is news to me.

Are you talking about SSDI? My wife got disability and each of my boys got money until they turned 18. She received around 2.5k and each of the boys got roughly 1k each.

It was a ONE TIME payment of $250 about ten years ago. My buddy got it when his spouse passed away. They were both full time employed and paid into the system.

Ponder that. They worked and paid and he got a whopping $250. These leeches that never hold a job get multiple times that PER MONTH from out taxes. It's infuriating.

What this guy said. We need a little more details. The money board can answer your questions better. Might be a good time to speak with a financial planner too.

Best of luck to your friend. Sucks.

There's a limit to the amount that family members can receive each month. The limit varies, but it is generally equal to between 150% and 180% of the basic benefit rate. If the sum of the benefits payable to family members is greater than this limit, the benefits will be reduced proportionately. Any benefits paid to a surviving divorced spouse based on disability or age won't count toward this maximum amount.

When my wife passed each of my 3 kids got $650 per month. Then when the first turned 18 the other 2 got just under $1000 per month. Then when the second turned 18 my third still only got $1000 and will continue to do so until he turns 18. There are annual increases for COLA but they are not significant. My new wife adopted my third but he still qualifies. The 18 year olds can collect until they finish high school but the money goes directly to them after they turn 18 until the month of their graduation.

No idea how they calculated it and when I went online to see her account it was locked because she had passed away.
She earned approx 30K in her last year of full work.

I did not qualify for spouse benefits because I made too much. But it wouldn’t have mattered anyway since there is a total family limit.

I’m pretty sure that $250 is just the funeral benefit. It has been the same since the implementation. It was a lot initially but it has not been touched since inflation.

There is spousal support but I believe there are several factors that go into it but depending on their financial situation or taxes, they should get spousal/child support from SS.

I'm not sure of the proper acronym. I'm talking about the benefits the kids will receive. Trying to figure out the formula.

According to that link above.

50% of decedent's benefit until 18

edit: 75% is correct, thought it was 50

Kids get it until they turn 18 or longer if they are in college provided they are not married.

When the kids are minors, the parent does have control of the money and can use it for things like food and clothing etc.

It has been this way since at least 1971 when my dad died (I was 9).

Yes, kids can receive it until 18 and can keep it while in college as long as they are enrolled full time. At least that is how it was when I was in school 15 years ago.

The $255 (one time payment to a living with surviving spouse) is called a "lump sum death payment" it's left over from the days when a funeral cost that amount.

The amount of a child's survivor benefit will depend on how much the number holder was insured for, it can be up to 75% of the insured amount up to a certain amount (usually 1 1/2 the number holders insured amount), the more kids receiving the less each child will get.

If he hasn't already filled for SSA Dib, he needs to do so immediately (as long as he is no longer working). Call the local SS office and set up an appointment or set up a my social security account (LINK ) and do it online.

PM me and I can walk you through the process.

Negative on college, up to age 18 and still can get it until age 19, if a full time HS student. It's been that way since at least the early 90s.
