What if they're riding in a single cab pickup? Or an El Camino? What about motorcycles?

It's about nearly the dumbest law.

Back seat when available, like if there's a back seat and it isn't full of younger kids already.

What if you have 4 chillren all under 13 in your 1986 Cutlass Supreme?

Im trying to think of when I was allowed to ride in the front seat. It was right around then. Likely when I was 12 at the earliest. Plenty of parents out there today that don’t create enough boundaries or exert there authority as a parent over a kid and would rather be cool and be their friend.

What about when you’re 8 bud heavys in and he’s your DD to the quick mart?

Should be weight/height based.
Age is irrelevant. It's physics.

Born in the 80s, pretty sure I was riding in the front seat when I was 5

It is. They use weight/height as the determining factor. The age is just to save face

It was a semi-serious question...it seems like young kids are allowed as passengers on a motorcycle

I thought the 13 year old requirement had no height factor to it?

I’ve never seen a kid under 13 on a motorcycle
If you don’t have a back seat they can ride up front

Hell in the 70's we used to lay across the back dashboard right next to the back window in our land whale cars.

My kid rode in the front seat when she was younger than 13. She was like 5'5" 115 lbs when she was 12. There are people driving that are smaller than that

Probably why there were more traffic fatalities in the 1970's than now.

Of course, but people know their child's age at 12. They're taking wild asses guesses at height and weight for the most part.
I know it's easy to measure both, but I doubt most parents know their child's weight within 10% once they're past the age of 6 or so.

Born in the '70s pretty sure i was allowed to turn the steering wheel while on paw paws lap. No power steering.

I was a kid in the 50's and every car I can remember riding in had no seatbelts and most of them had steel dashboards.
