Was talking to a parent of a kid today who will be an incoming freshman. Got registered for classes, the whole nine yards, then found out he's on a waiting list for a dorm room. This seems especially fricked. Right now the list is 100+ students long. I can see overbooking a little bit because there are always a few no-shows but 100? Is this how they run things there? They've got until August 16 to decide what to do. That's the date you can drop without repercussions.

SELA Dorms are very urban. Don’t wait, find something else.

They're too small and cost too much but at least you can get some decent pizza or a gyro at 2 AM?

They were supposed to build a massive student housing project off North Oak Street but the president at that time Sally Clausen tried to sneak it in off North Oak Street next to Whitmar Acres and Woodbridge subdivisions which immediately was met with multiple lawsuits and protests so the property sits vacant to this day. Had that development gone through, SLU would have never had a student housing shortage

I remember my freshman year at Southeastern. After having to walk into D Vickers Hall for freshman level English courses I had some 2nd guesses about my decision to attend Southeastern. The crowd and behavior outside of D Vickers was not something I would expect at a university. Loud, obnoxious, blocking the entrances, blasting obscene music on cell phones at full volume. Generally buffoon like.

I had a buddy a class above me who said don't worry, once you are out of entry level courses that crowd evaporates. Which was true. There was also a crime problem for those living on campus. Same element that hung in front of the English hall were highly represented in the on-campus housing. I didn't live on campus and was very thankful for that.

I don't know what it's like now but that was the case when I was there.

Tell them to rush a fraternity or sorority, they have open rooms.

They struggling to fill their houses due to the overprice cost housing is giving them.

Not sure but I know they have new, nice dorms with private suites. Probably shouldn't have waited so long to secure it.

The housing department was very dysfunctional when I was there. 10 years later it still appears that way

When I went to school there, Southeastern offered me a free dorm room as part of my scholarship for my high ACT score.

Not sure if they are still doing this for academic scholarships, but that may be the reason. I remember I had until the start of school to decide if I wanted to accept the free dorm or not. So I guess they keep the waitlist to give to students if the schollys decline the dorm room.

I took the free dorm room my freshman year, but I declined it after that because I’d rather live in BR and commute to school twice a week.

I lived in Tangipahoa Hall which was nice because it was closest to the cafeteria and Garrett Hall which was where all of my business classes were.

How is the family just finding out about this?

My kid stayed in a dorm there for cheer camp last week and I was pretty impressed with it.
