I remember my freshman year at Southeastern. After having to walk into D Vickers Hall for freshman level English courses I had some 2nd guesses about my decision to attend Southeastern. The crowd and behavior outside of D Vickers was not something I would expect at a university. Loud, obnoxious, blocking the entrances, blasting obscene music on cell phones at full volume. Generally buffoon like. I had a buddy a class above me who said don't worry, once you are out of entry level courses that crowd evaporates. Which was true. There was also a crime problem for those living on campus. Same element that hung in front of the English hall were highly represented in the on-campus housing. I didn't live on campus and was very thankful for that. I don't know what it's like now but that was the case when I was there.

Would love to know when you were there because that 100% was nothing like my experience when I was there (graduated in 2014). I was an English major so I pretty much lived in DVic and never saw that, and never saw any “crime problems.”

To OP is the kid on the wait list for one of the two room forms of a dorm in general? If I remember right almost everyone got into at least a shared one (and they have like 3 new buildings in the last 2 years), but usually a wait list for the private ones.

2004

Hopefully things changed.

This was the last year or so before the new dorms were erected on the main campus. There were official Southeastern bulletins put out about the problem of break ins and things being stolen from cars and dorms on campus.

It was a running joke amongst me and friends there regarding the crowd in front of D Vic at the time. It was definitely a hangout spot.

Pull out of the waiting list ? The dorms suck. If the kid lives in Baton Rouge, he can commute and it might take him ten or twenty minutes more to get to campus than it would LSU
I lived in Central and I could get to Southeastern, Park, and to class probably quicker than I could have fought BR traffic, parked two miles away at LSU, and then walked to class.

Or get him an apartment. Plenty of one bed in Hammond. Even have some downtown that could be a nice spot and allows him to walk to the football stadium and to restaurants and bars right there.

Right now the list is 100+ students long. I can see overbooking a little bit because there are always a few no-shows but 100?

Forgot to mention in my last post, I was on the wait list too. Don’t remember how far back I was but a spot did eventually open up... half-way through the semester.

People drop classes and drop out of school, people don’t get along with their roommates, they decide they don’t like living on campus.

The only thing that sucked about coming in half-way through is that they still forced me to purchase the full meal plan, which is a set amount of meals in the cafeteria and a preloaded balance on your student ID. But the portion on your ID could be used in the marketplace too. I was king for a day at the end of the semester, buying gatorades and Red Bulls for my friends.

About a year ago I walk the student housing at SLU for a maintenance project, other than the oldest one, the dorms were not bad. The oldest one (do not remember the name) wasn't bad, but you could tell it had some miles on it. They are dorms, so they are small, but compared to some others out there, it's not the end of the world to be 18, away from parents and staying in them.
