Every year at my annual physical in February / March I get my lipid panel done and my cholesterol levels are above desired numbers.

Good Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels are perfect...but the bad cholesterol is too high.

Question I have is, how much impact would two months worth of diet have on that?

I just had my lipid panel done right after the Thanksgiving, Christmas Season, New Years, Superbowl, Mardi Gras stretch.

March thru Mid-November I eat fairly well...then that stretch happens and I eat like shite for 2.5 months.

Is that period of time capable of elevating cholesterol or is it not that fluid?

Yes. I was able to get mine from pre diabetic high to very good in 3 months. Now, some of mine was family health stuff so I may be a bit abnormal, but you can definitely change it (good or bad) in that amount of time.

Diet can and does affect levels, but only to a certain extent. So it’s hard to answer your exact scenario.

My cholesterol is so high that my doctor said “when I see people with these levels I usually advise them to lose 150lbs.” Problem is that I weight 155

I just had mine the week before Thanksgiving then a follow-up the week after Christmas.

I wanted to cry foul.

Yeah mine isnt that high. With all my factors, I am below 1% of having any heart issues. I just don't want to get lazy about my heart.

Not sure that 2 months would make that much difference.

What are your numbers? If your HDL is high enough then LDL may not make that much difference.

If you are in decent shape and eat somewhat healthy - and still have super high cholesterol, then it's most likely genetic. If you're super fat, then it's most likely your fault and need to lose weight.

You can do a lot in 2 months. Exercise, and high fiber diet. Get your blood moving, and the numbers will come down.

Cholesterol isn't bad for you. Your body makes like 3,000 mg a day because it is very important.

HDL and LDL are just proteins that transfer cholesterol from you liver or to your liver. If you have funny numbers for either one of those it is because something is wrecked in your body. Cholesterol is used to repair your body. 50% of your cell membranes are made from cholesterol.

Cholesterol (Part 1): The Real Purpose

PURPOSE:
1. Allows cell permeability - allowing electrolytes to travel in and out of the cell.
2. Protects the cell againts microbes
3. Needed to make bile
4. Needed to make fat soluble vitamins - A, D, E, K1, K2
5. Needed to make adrenal hormones
6. Needed to make sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone
7. Your immune system needs cholesterol to function 8. Needed to combat the negative effects of bacterial toxins

I made the mistake of getting mine checked one year right after Thanksgiving and the levels were ridiculously high. I'm in pretty good shape so I was stunned. I ate more veggies and less meat for the next 3 months and it dropped more than 100 points.

Thats all fine and good but my Doctor says I need to get my overall cholesterol down 40 - 50 points.

Just wondering if that stretch of eating is making it spike a little bit.

HDL of 62 is pretty damn good. You should be able to improve your overall number with diet and exercise. If the doctor was really concerned he would have put you on a statin...they like to throw those around like candy.

Note: I am a heart patient, not a heart doctor.

HDL of 62 pretty good for a guy. Total cholesterol is meaningless and your low triglycerides are a good thing as well.

A large portion of your lipid profile is genetic but there is always some room for improvement for anyone with lifestyle change. If you really wanted to see how much you can move the needle I would give it a solid 90 days of eating well by minimizing unhealthy simple carbs, sugar and saturated fats. Keeping the alcohol intake to no more than 1-2 per day and exercising minimum 3 days per week and more if you can. Re-test at that point and see just how much you've improved. Good luck.
